Who needs boobs when you can have a Garmin?

I think I have really made it as a blogger now.  I was contacted by someone asking to use my expertise and when they wrote to me they wrote  "Dear Joan"

Joan?!  Who in the world is Joan and did they really read my blog or just come across it and go straight to my email address. Joan is not even close to Christy.  Not even a single letter in common.  Anyone else get contacted by Wizpert?  Did they get your name right?

Although I think my favorite inquiry was from a lady wanting to do a guest post on my blog about mothers and the cost of breast implants.  I can tell you about the cost of implants because my mother works with two plastic surgeons and helps with a lot of those.  Even if I got the implants for free the cost is still around $7,000.  (If that is off Mom feel free to comment, i know it has been awhile since we talked about it)

I had a fund once for boobs.  I was saving all the spare change and one dollar bills.  It takes a long time to save up money of any significance that way.  Do you want to see what I actually did with that money?  It is okay to look because it wasn't new boobs.

Yup I bought my Garmin.  Changed my life forever, maybe not in the way that new boobs would have, but I haven't been the same since! I guess I got over needing new boobs. I got a Handful bra instead and developed a bad racing habit that has led me to marathon training this year.

Speaking of Handful bras, I won one in a giveaway over at A Taller Order this week, YAY! I would link to the website here but my mouse just died and I can't figure out how to do it with my laptop now.  UGH.  Of course I am all out of batteries for my mouse.  You can check out Wym at atallerorder.com.

and here are some fun random running facts for your Friday reading pleasure!

The fastest speed of a human running was set by Usain Bolt at 27.79 mph during a 100 m sprint.

Note that is anaerobic : the highest sustained speed is just over 15 miles an hour - i.e. a 4 minute mile.
So the first is the limit of the legs, the second the limit of the heart.  source

Most world class 100 meter men reach their top speed within 50-60 meters. Women reach their top end speed a bit earlier, so more of their race is speed endurance. source

Since its inception, the Boston Marathon has been held on the holiday commemorating Patriots' Day. From 1897-1968, the Boston Marathon was held on April 19, unless the 19th fell on a Sunday. Since 1969, the holiday has been officially recognized on the third Monday in April. The last non-Monday champion was current Runner's World editor Amby Burfoot, who posted a time of 2:22:17 on Friday, April 19, 1968. source

In 2011, Belgian runner Stefan Engels ran a marathon every day for a year, covering a total distance of 9,569 miles (1,5401 kilometers).

Perhaps no finish at the Boston marathon was as notorious as Rosie Ruiz’s in 1980. After winning the women’s competition in 2 hours, 31 minutes, 56 seconds, Ruiz was exposed as having joined the race near the finish line. Shortly after, her 1979 New York City marathon time of 2 hours, 56 minutes was revoked when it was discovered that she rode the subway to the finish line.

The average recreational runner’s training program for a marathon is 22 weeks, and during that time will run an average of 40 miles per week totalling 880 miles before toeing the line on race day. source

A marathon runner will go through 2 pairs of sneakers while training for the race.

It takes the average woman 51,214 steps to complete a marathon.

The average woman burns 2,880 calories while running a marathon.

2010 had the highest percent increase in overall finisher totals (10%) in nearly three decades. Growth such as this hasn’t been seen since the pre-Second Running Boom in 1992 (9.2%) and recently, 2009 (9.0%), and based on preliminary totals, 2011 should also show above average growth as well in this country. source

For the first time ever, the Half-Marathon now claims more finishers than the 10K, ranking #2 next to the 5K in finishers. Females continue to dominate the Half-Marathon race field with 59% representation. source

  1. This cracked me up! I think you made the right call buying the Garmin instead of saving up for boobs! I'm with you on just wearing Handfuls all the time instead - much cheaper too!
    :)

  2. Very interesting! Thanks for the trivia.

  3. I love the runner facts too. Looks like I anthem average female runner. :)
I think running has given me confidence that I don't think a boob job can give me.

  4. What an awesome post! I love all of the great facts

  5. Ha, this made me laugh! I love that you chose the Garmin-- you are a tough runner chick so you obviously made the right choice! :)

  6. a garmin is way better than boobs. Think how uncomfortable 20 miles would be with a huge rack!

  7. Since I started running long distance, I'm so happy to not have boobs. They make padded bra for when and if I decide tonight I want people to think I'm loaded on top. The only person that needs to know I dont have anything on the top is my hubby. Plus my motto is more than a mouth full is a waste. HA HA. Love your blog Christy or should I say Joan. Ha Ha. Love my Garmin, the best thing I've ever bought for my running. Have a good weekend Christy.

  8. Take it from a 32DD- you are LUCKY! I've tried every high-tech sports bra their is, and still end up having to wear 2! My mom says her girls are part of why she could never get into running for more than a few weeks at a time. So, if anyone knows a REALLY good sports bra for thin-but-busty runners, I'd love to check it out! Thanks for sharing the fun facts, "Joan." At least they didn't address something to your deceased father instead of you! (That has happened to me)

  9. Do you ever wish you had two Garmins so you could stuff your bra with them? :)

  10. I think you chose wisely.

I got an email from someone wanting to pay me to do a guest post on my blog about picking the right dentist. WTH? They did get my name right. When I didn't respond, they sent another email. I responded that I wasn't interested and then they wrote back and offered more money. Whatever, still not interested. Random.

    Cool statistics.

  11. Glad you traded in your boob fund for a garmin...they probably would have slowed you down with all of that bouncing and extra wind resistance! This was a good way to start my day!

  12. Dear Joan, I love this post on b00bs and Garmins and running facts.

You must have taken your clever pills this morning, Christy. This is exactly why I miss you when you don't post for a few days.. never know what you are going to surprise us with!

When I was watching the Boston coverage the commentator was talking about how much smaller the elite marathon runners have gotten over the years. The men and women are both getting shorter and lighter. Both are a lot smaller than these stats for half marathon winners.

I hope you have a fun Friday!

    1. SO glad you love it. bOObs are highly over rated anyway, mine did their job and now I have two healthy kids, they can retire now :)

  13. ok...so, if boobs are $7000 for FREE............how much do they cost if they aren't? Holy cow!

Love your fun facts...nice Garmin ;)

  14. Joan?! That really is pretty funny. I agree, Joan and Christy are not close in proximity at all.

I always used to want boobs too. Is it bad if I still want them?! I would get a nice discount through work so maybe someday? Probably not, more like wishful thinking. I think spending your boob $$ on the garmin was a wise decision.

  15. I would much rather have a Garmin than boobs (and trust me, I have NONE). They just get in the way with running anyway :) Too funny about the Joan thing!!!

  16. This is the coolest blog of the day!! I can't believe she rode the subway to the finish!! HAHAHAHA! How about that!?

I have no boobs but I look at it as a plus. I have two friends that have big boobs and they rub an are hard to keep under control. I'll take my flat chest any day :)

  17. Great post Joan:)! I have thought about the boob thing before, but the thought of complications for something so trivial makes it a definite no for me. After nursing 2 kids they could use a lift though:) The Garmin is the best choice hands down!

  18. Boobs schmoobs. I think you made the right investment! :) And Joan? REALLY? Reading FAIL.

  19. I would pick a Garmin over boobs anyday. Less to worry about bouncing around while running...LOL! Interesting facts on running.

  20. LOVE THIS POST! Very interesting stats. And very good decision about Garmin over boobs. While I wouldn't kick bigger boobs out of bed, having smaller ones certainly solves any bouncing issues or requiring sports bras that cost $100. My $10 Target one works just fine thanks! :-) I've VERY surprised that 42% of people are happy with their fitness. Who in this world is seriously happy with their fitness? Who doesn't wish they were faster?!

  21. I just dropped off my foldgers coffee can of change to the bank a few weeks ago. That took 4 years to fill up & I only had $91. It would take me a long time to get to $7000 if I did it that way. LOL!

  22. This post makes me laugh - and I needed it! Thank you - so creative and funny!

Thanks for all the stats too, they were very interesting to read.

    Have a great weekend! :)

  23. Love those facts! That's incredibly fast...almost 30 mph, no wonder his last name is bolt!

Garmin = much better investment than boobs :) Your garmin will bring you so much happiness over the years and the initial appeal of the boobs would probably wear off after a while?

    ReplyDelete
  24. That's hilarious about the blog contacts. :) These are great facts! I'm not surprised that there are more women runners than men, but didn't realize the half distance is now 2nd to the 5k. Wow!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ha, ha, ha! Loved your title! As a "big girl" that runs I'll confirm, you don't want large ta-tas. A Garmin is a much better choice!

    ReplyDelete
  26. THIS WAS THE BEST POST EVER! I want breasts but now that I have 5 Handful bras I feel good without them. Colin is the only one who suffers anyways ;) lol

and I'm going to start my garmin, I mean breast fund today!!!!

Have a great weekend Joan ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. i love how you are open about having a bigger boob fund haha. the past 3 half marathons i wore my handful bra-- LOVE IT. although it does't make me look super busty, i don't look like a little boy

    ReplyDelete
  28. I say the Garmin was a way better choice!! And I love the running fun facts. I had no idea about most of that.

  29. "Joan"? I got an email yesterday from a guy who saw that I once wrote on my blog about poop and did I want to display a "graphic showing sanitation conditions through the world." I do think that's interesting, but my blog isn't the place for it. And I thought it was funny that he chose to write to me.

I loved the statistics and running trivia! I am below average in weight and BMI (yay!), above average in height by two inches, sometimes satisfied with my weight---and NEVER satisfied with my running ability.

Boobs are overrated. I had them when my kids were babies and they swiftly disappeared after that. I didn't miss them.

  30. $5800 That includes everything (Surgeon, anesthesia, OR and of course "the babes"). :)

  31. I had boobs in another life. yep...DD. I hated them with a passion. it is hard to dress nicely with those. they cause back pain. for me they made me hunch a lot. for sports it is such a pain in the butt. It was the last thing that went down when I was loosing the weight and I dont want them back!!! EVER.
    ?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think the Garmin was a way better investment. :-) And, I love the stat about 40% of running women being satisfied with their weight. . . I don't know the stat for non-running women, but I'm assumign it's much lower?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hah! Love it!! I wonder if they have the numbers of people who did the Boston with Garmin's AND fake boobs? I highly doubt it!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. A new Garmin = far better than new boobs! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love trivia!!! Don't think I'd ever get fake boobs. I have 3 girls and I wouldn't want to explain, well I thought they were too small.. blah blah..

    ReplyDelete
  36. You definitely made the right decision. Look where your Garmin has taken you. And where would you be if you had gotten boobs? Plus you saved a lot of money. Now you can buy...a Lululemon running skirt too!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love the facts, those are cool! I definitely prefer a half marathon over a 10k. 10k's suck my lungs out of my body.

I'd prefer a Garmin over new boobs. I'd prefer nothing over new boobs. I like that mine are small, makes running much easier! :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I had boobs for a while, too. Then I got off my ass, stopped eating junk and lost them. I'm looking for some abs now, though not trying too hard :)
    Males:
    Average Weight: 172.9 lbs I'm a below average 158
Average Height: 70.46 inches / 5 feet, 10 ½ inches Below average again at 5'9.5"
Average Body Mass Index (BMI): 24.4 Below as well! Somewhere around 18 or so. I haven't checked recently since I haven't been running because of injury.

Fun facts! I'm glad you got the Garmin instead as well. I wish more women would!

  39. gratitude for the practical associations. I've been looking for all of these a extensive instance ago. My surgeons provided me some information regarding MHRA and also breast surgery, that's why I'm incredibly eager to know.
