Three Things Thursday

1. Newborns are a lot of work.  Newborns kittens are too. One of my wild outside cats left one with the placenta still attached in my driveway on Sunday.  I left him there for awhile hoping she would come back and get him.  I even enticed her with a can of tuna.  She ate the tuna and didn't even give the kitten more than a second glance. So now I have a bottle kitten.  We named him Rocky, since we found him on the rocks in our driveway.  Real creative I know.

The kids love sitting and snuggling with him.

I hae been getting up in the middle of the night to feed Rocky.  I had kind of thought I was done with that sort of thing.  I am such a softie though.  Did you know you have to help newborn kittens poo and pee?

Fun.

2. Running...    I did a 10 mile run Monday and got foot pain half way through.  I think part of the problem was the very uneven road/trails I was running on.  I did a five mile run today pain free :) after doing 65 minutes on the elliptical.  My legs were feeling pretty tired, but that was sort of the goal since I am trying to not piss off my foot too much.  I think I will stick to flatter more even surfaces for a while too.

Three weeks until I leave for Hood to Coast.  Three weeks!  I haven't really even thought of it that much since I was so busy with my first marathon and then trying to get recovered.

3.  I took my son school shopping Monday for the first time.  The school list seemed kind of crazy like sani wipes, hand soap, and kleenexes.  Really?  The school doesn't proide hand soap?  I just hope they don't try to turn my kid into some crazy germ a phobe.  Sure you need to wash your hands, but you don't need to be a freak about it.

Seems so crazy to have a a kid in school.  He was just a baby keeping me up all night.  The kids also had dentist appointments Monday and were cavity free!  YAY!

  1. That kitten is so sad and pathetic, but too freaking cute. Also, you have to help him go to the bathroom???

I feel like I remember having to buy kleenex, etc. for school when I was a kid and it all just became communal because the school wouldn't pay for it themselves...maybe i'm making that up.

  4. That kitten is so cute:) Exciting for your son to start school and the supply lists are so crazy! It seems they get bigger and bigger each year, until they reach middle school and then they taper. Yes, I have a middle schooler Yikes! My oldest will be in 7th grade this year:0 My plan was to run today but I keep getting random weird pains lately. Achilles, hip flexor, calf, knee. What's up with that?! Hopefully tomorrow:)

  5. Wait. How do you help a kitten...relieve itself?

    Congrats on no cavities!

  6. Cute kitten story! I bet your kids are loving having him around! Rubbish about your foot though - hope it heals soon.

  7. Oh! Surprise family member - congrats!! Kitties grow so fast, glad you were there for him!
Elementary school lists are insane!! My son starts Jr. High this year (GASP) and his list is less than a quarter of his little sister's.
Almost Hood to Coast time??? Wow!

  8. Oh my--I would be a softie for the kitty too... Poor little thing. When does school start out there? We start 9/4 here so plenty of time for the school shopping thing. I don't want to rush summer away.

  9. Wow, I didn't even think of school lists! Yikes. Apparently I am not ready to have a kindergartner!

  10. You are so nice to help that sweet kitty especially since it takes so much work. Starting school is much harder on the parents than the children. Good luck!

  11. Yeah, we're hitting the stores for school, too..including me for my classroom. Our school stopped providing the once a month box of sandpaper, er, tissues about 5 years ago. It's been me providing them when I remember or, more likely, a kid or three bringing them in when I forget for a couple days and tell them to use the paper towels that don't suck up water but push it. We don't provide crayons, pencils, erasers, markers, colored pencils, glue, scissors, etc any more either. Sad, but true of pretty much all schools. But, I still can't wait to get back!!

  12. Did you at least eat the placenta so you'd have the energy to do the night feedings? :)

  13. I am so happy that you decided to help the kitten. I am still taking care of five puppies but at least they have their mother there to help them. My son's school supply list asks for the same stuff!Crazy isn't it?

  14. The kitty is so cute, but I think I'd be like you--a bit over the whole newborn thing! You're a good person!

The hand sanitizer, etc. is all the norm these days w/ school supplies. My school offered the option this year to just write a check, though and they'll buy it. I'm in!

    Good luck with the foot.

  15. Hand soap is weird. Also I am kind of disturbed that you have to help a kitten poop. Having three full grown cats... that idea scares me.

  16. Cute kitten!! I had to do that with our cat Cynnamon and she just turned 16 yesterday.

  17. The kitten is really cute! I am a softie too so I would probably take Rocky in also. Growing up on a farm we fostered lots of kittens over the years. It probably drove my mom crazy that I was always finding and rescuing them.

  18. I do know that Mommy cats have to help babes poo but I didn't know about pee... are you rubbing his little belly, KittyMama? I am really happy you have taken the little guy in and are looking after him. You ARE a softie and I really like that about you!

I hope your foot starts to feel better really soon... Hood to Coast coming up so soon! Wow. Where is the Summer going?

Hope your Little Dude has a great time at school.

  20. Is it wrong that I'm curious what a kitten placenta looks like - and exactly HOW you help a kitten poop and pee?

  21. I don't mind the soap and hand sanitizer and tissue requests. Have you SEEN other kids? Ew. And no, our schools don't provide that either - such is the nature of public schools. But... I'm more weirded out by the fact I have to provide 92 pencils. 92!!! I'm sorry, that seems really excessive.

  22. I remember my mom telling me when I was a kid that the reason the mother cat licks the kitten is to "stimulate digestion". I thought it was gross at the time.

  23. That kitty is super tiny! So you have to help it use the facilities huh? Sounds like a lot, and the exact reason why we will never have a cat. HTC is going to be amazing for you, you'll have a great time!

  24. You are a softie, but I'd do the same thing--what a cute kitty!

I ran 50 minutes this morning (my longest run since March 5!), but I feel like it wasn't enough....I'm kind of missing the days when I would go for a long enough run that I could be OK with drinking a huge chocolate smoothie thing afterwards like the one in the current Runners World. Not quite there yet, but I'm working on it.

School supplies!! Crazy (fun, but crazy)!! Don't ask me how much money I spent yesterday on school supplies x 2 for kindergarten (and that was with a $20 coupon). We had to get hand sanitizer, too, but the thing that got me was the crayons. They each had to buy two boxes of eight and one box of 24. When I was kid, I had *one* ordinary box of crayons. We had to get two boxes of markers (each) too. I looked at the first grade list and it's very similar....

Our first day is Aug. 16. What about you guys?
