Three Things Thursday: Getting Ready for Run to the Pub Half Marathon

1. 9 days until the Run to the Pub half marathon.  I can hardly wait!! Of course my son is starting to develop a cough and was all stuffed up last night.  Perfect.

Unsarcastically perfect is the beautiful elevation chart for the Run to the Pub Half marathon...

Okay the first three miles are not to great, but it it mostly all downhill from there.  Looks like a pretty good course for a PR attempt on...  if I were only in PR attempting kind of shape which I am not.

2. Goals for the Run to the Pub.  Hmm.. I have been a little reluctant to set any goals.  Seems like this training cycle has been full of colds, flu, and most recently a UTI and a stomach bug.  Also some back pain in late December.. not to mention how hard it is to do speed work on snow covered roads.  Not really trying to make excuses, but there they are.

Right.. back to goals because excuses are lame.

"A" Goal would be of course to get a PR which would be anything under 1:37 and would mean faster than a 7:22 min/mile pace.  Don't think this will happen, but you never know what can happen on race day.

"B" Goal  is to keep it under 1:45.  I think this is pretty reasonable.  It would mean more of a 7:45ish pace.  No I didn't check the math there..so sue me.   I think given the downhill nature of the course it will be easy to maintain this pace.

"C" Goal  Keep the pace under 8 minute miles.  Reasons why... see above..blah blah downhill course.

3. The outfit!  Not completely laid out yet, but certainly narrowed down, I can narrow it down further when I see what the weather will be like on race day.  I would hate to be overdressed, I hate racing hot!

Gap half zip pullover that I just got in neon mint, so soft and I love it.  T-shirt from Walmart, scarf from the dollar store, PROcompression shamrock socks, Aspaeris compression shorts, sparkly skirt my sister made, and striped socks from Target for possible arm warmers.  It is is really cold I will wear my Brooks tights instead of the shorts.
Normally I would wear my Team Beef jersey, but since it is a St Paddy's day race, I wanted to be in the spirit of things.

Right now they are forecasting a high of 49 with a 60% chance of rain/snow showers. Another weather site is forecasting a high of 43 and snow.   I won't hold my breath as it could change drastically in the next nine days, but I bet I start checking it daily from here on out.

Are you an obsessive weather checker before a race or do you wait until the day before to check it out?

PS If you didn't already don't forget to enter my giveaway..there will be three lucky winners!

  1. That outfit is killer! You're going to have a great race!

I am pretty obsessive about the weather, usually, but for this weekend's race I haven't bee, weirdly.

  4. I'm in full scale weather obsession mode for my half on Saturday. I still need to figure out my goals. My running has been a bit all over the map lately, so I need to figure out what I'm aiming for!

  5. Good luck on your race. I know what you mean about setting goals when so many things seem to get in the way. I love the outfit since I happen to have the same socks. I also have a Team Sparkle skirt in the same color. I wish I knew how to sew so I could make my own skirt too!

  6. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR HALF!!! I start checking the weather as soon as it starts showing up in the extended forecast. It's not as critical now that I have year-round, all weather running gear, but the first year I got back into running, it often meant I needed (or at least could justify) new apparel for new-to-me-for-running-through weather.

  7. Love that outfit! Good luck on your half! I wouldn't be surprised at all if you set a new PR in this race.

  8. Love the St. Paddy's day spirit there! I'd say you have legit reasons for it not to be a PR, but like you said, anything can happen and it does look like a great course.

Yes, I have already starting checking weather for my marathon in 9 days as well. Looking pretty perfect right now--fingers crossed!

  9. Love the race outfit - I've got a half that weekend too but haven't given much thought to what I'm going to wear. Given the crazy and crappy weather we've been having I'm almost afraid to start checking the forecast!

Nice downhill course - could be very PR friendly :)

  10. Love the outfit! Now I'm inspired to dig out my green short and sparkly skirt for my "get lucky" half next Saturday :) (I've for the same compression shamrock socks now too!)

That course looks awesome! It seems like it would keep you from going out too fast, and ten you could just kick it into over drive and cruise down the hill!

I haven't been looking at the weather too much for this race, but in hopes of not jinxing it- my dad sent me the 10 day forecast and it looks *perfect* :)

  14. Depending on the weather, I know you can go fast (I'm sorry to hear about all the illness, though, especially the UTI--those suck). I'm running a half that same day in Moab--not sure about goals yet since my real focus is next month's Eugene Marathon. A PR would be nice, of course! Good luck!

  15. a year ago i had a goal to get a 1:45, so i automatically know that is an 8:08 pace--you totally have that. I had no idea your Pr was soooooooooo speedy, can't wait till I can call myself a sub 1:40 halfer :)

Rain/Snow? More and more glad i'm holding out till sept for montana :)

  16. Just keep that elevation chart in mind when you're out there and you'll do fine. Downhill sounds very good!

  17. Love the outfit and your goals. The course looks like a fantastic one to PR on too. I like the last 10K!

I obsess over the weather before a big race. Probably almost a little too much. :-)

  18. I'm very obsessive over the weather.. it's annoying, I check daily and as far out as I can! lol.

I love your outfit! So green :)

  19. man, I hadn't checked the weather yet. That is pretty disappointing. I just want it to be nice. No more snow!! I'm crossing my fingers that forecast will change (a lot) before the race.

I like your goals for the 1/2. I'm basically in the same spot, I want to run it somewhere between 1:40 and 1:50. But I don't want to push it too much because I want to be injury free for my marathon next month. And I love your outfit!
