Not running sux

Really I am feeling like I should rename my blog domain from christyruns.com to something like
  • christyusedtorun.com
  • christydoesn'trun.com
  • christymissesrunning.com
  • christyneedsanewrightquad.com
you get the idea.  I could go on and on.

I had a good run Friday, and by good I mean slow easy and slow for three point one miles.  Saturday I was feeling pretty good so I ran/walked 5.5 miles with my sister at a faster pace than I should have.  Afterwards my right quad yelled at me the rest of the day.

So Sunday I did not run.  Today I did not run.  I did do yoga.  and some more yoga.  This is how I feel about that.

When I first was injured and I started in on the yoga, I hated it.  Too slow. Too boring.

I am slowly learning to appreciate it.  I am learning that I am as stiff and inflexible as I have ever been, especially in my hips and hammies.
I am learning to enjoy the feeling of my muscles stretching and oddly enjoying the slow relaxed pace.

It has been a long time since I have slowed down.  I am thinking of taking off the rest of the month from running.  Not a happy thought, but if I want to get better...AND I DO!  I think I really need to  not run.

It is making me crazy. I see a road and I can feel me running down it.  I can see me on the road, one foot in front of the other, breathing in the clean fresh air and hearing my foot steps on the gravel.  I am at this point planning to cancel all races until at least July, possibly August.

The frustrating thing about this is, I can feel so good sitting here, just a slight burning in my quad, but as soon as I start running it just gets uncomfortable.  Not really painful, just not good in a way that I KNOW that if I keep running, keep pushing, I am going to regret it.

Okay well enough of the wa wa wa story.

Positives are..working on flexibility, taking up yoga, and more time to clean the house.  I tried a little retail therapy.  I was looking for something nice to wear to a wedding this weekend.  Apparently I no longer have those kind of skills.  I can shop for running things like nobody's business, but something dressy..I didn't try a single thing on, and I went to about 10 different stores in the mall.  Aack!

  1. Oh boy I can relate! I'm sorry for you. Keep resting it will get better. I hear you on the shopping! Running gear I can do but I'm the worst person to take shopping otherwise. I actually hate it.

  2. It's all about patience with running injuries. I've had my fair share in the past and the longest I've had to take off is 6 months (because I kept trying to just run). DONT DO THAT! I was really scared running today because I figured I would just re-injure my knee. I'm not totally satisfied with how it feels, so I might take another week or two off. SIGH. Good luck!

  3. I totally feel for you. Last year, about this time, I could've written that same post! Ditto on the shopping cluelessness, too. I've recently tried talking my friends into having running-themed parties so I'll actually have something to wear.
I'm glad you're filling your time with yoga. It really is beneficial...so is the time off. It will pass. I promise!

  5. It is so tough to rest even when you know it's the right thing to do. I love your new domain names but you're taking the right approach so you probably don't need to change it anytime soon. I find the worst is when you know you probably could go out and run but like you said, you'll regret it afterwards. Hang in there and good work on learning to appreciate the other workouts!

  6. Ugh that's the worst! Nothing like being told you can't do something to make you want to do that thing so bad! Especially running. I shop for running stuff constantly and then wear the same crap to work for like 6 years. Fail. Hope your quad feels better soon!

  7. Sorry, I am totally feeling your pain right now. While I can run, I can't bike or swim and I have a tri in like 3 weeks!!! And it's not looking hopeful. Injuries suck, no other way to say it. But try to keep active and stay motivated, it's really just a blip in the long run!

  8. Girl I feel you. It completely sucks, but it won't last forever! I really did laugh out loud over your new blog title suggestions, although they so aren't true!

  9. Hang in there - once your body is healed you'll be back to zipping away the miles. And this recovery period will seem like a small blip on your radar.

  10. Oooh, maybe I should do some yoga. I think that is ok if i'm taking time off from exercise. I mean, that can only help my cranky ITB.

  11. I have been taking some time off as well, and I have been doing yoga and more strength training... sometimes I think we concentrate too much on getting miles in.

Hope you are back at it soon!

  12. Well, if it's any consolation, tomorrow I'll be joining you in the "Not running but really miss it" category! I've got one last group run this afternoon, and it feels like I'm headed to a goodbye party of sorts. :( These next six weeks can't go by fast enough!!!
Take care- rest that leg, and you'll be back to fast running sooner than you think.

  13. So funny about the shopping issue. I have so many running clothes and that is all my family ever buys me. I need new regular clothes, but every time I go somewhere I am only drawn to running stuff:) Hope your quad heals. Taking time off is hard, but sometimes necessary:/

  14. In the course of the last month or so I started yoga... its ridiculous how inflexible I am, but I agree with you, I've slowly started enjoy the stretch, the slight pain (for me), and ever so slightly seeing some progress when I do a stretch and am able to do it a little deeper

  15. Christy, I'll trade you my whole left leg for your right quad ;)
During the time I've been off from running I've read about 12 or so books, if not more. A few in running, but mostly mindless sci-fi/ fantasy. I've been spinning a lot on the stationary trainer and...stretching. I only have about two more weeks

  17. I am not a good shopper either... when I actually have money to spend I get way too fussy!

Good to have a plan to rest the remainder of the the month. I am sure it will be HELL but so good for you! Love the picture!

  18. See! If I lived closer we could do a fashion show. In men's clothes. And it would be HILARIOUS! (Ass less chaps, anyone?! Lol!)

I can think of LOTS of cool crap to do to kill time!

  19. Just be patient lady and you'll be good as new in no time! As someone who regularly struggles with injuries which cause me to take off running for months at a time, all I can say is take time off and let yourself heal. It's so hard to not be run ing and enjoying your favorite activity- but in the end it's more important to get better :)

  20. I'm impressed that you are finding the good in Yoga, and your plans to cancel races. Both smart choices, but not easy. Hope that quad HEALS fast!

  21. Hope your quad improves soon! How frustrating, but it is better to take a few days off now, than a few months off because it gets more serious! When my knee was annoying me, I thought about how I wanted to run for the rest of my life, and that made me stick to my exercises.

  22. Oh man, being injured is awful! Why couldn't it have happened when it was freezing cold instead of finally warming up? I hope you feel better and get back to running quickly!

  23. I am still on the no running diet... It does suck. I feel like I have lost all my fitness already I am looking for cardio routine with no impact... We will get better...
