Suck it up Buttercup

I am not going to lie, the last month has been hard. On so many levels.

Hard not to get out there and run, feel that freedom, stress relief, enjoy the fresh air, time to myself, all the things that running are to me.

Hard to DNS races, two so far and one more at the end of this week.

Hard to watch other people run seemingly without a care in the world.

Hard because I know all the work I have done is slipping away and I will have to start over.

This isn't a cry for me sort of post, I don't want that. Sure if you are injured or have been and know what I am going through feel free to commiserate.  I don't mind.  Misery loves company.

I don't want to toot my own horn either, but I worked hard to get where I was. Hill sprints, hundred of jump lunges, burpees, all the miles...all the times I repeated my mantra of "you are stonger than that" when I wanted to quit and I kept pushing.

So I have a new one right now

 "Suck it up, Buttercup".

I know it is supposed to be more along the lines of  "keep pushing, keep going even though it hurts"  but I am using it more as a don't give up, keep believing, keep your chin up, quit being a whiner even though you can't push it like you want to right now, and that does hurt on a whole different level.

Basically I am telling myself to suck it up until I can really suck it up and kick some butt again.

I can't magically undo what is done. I can only work towards getting better.  I can suck it up and wait for the day I can go at it hard again.

This is not the end of the world it is merely a well deserved break.  (Ok I can't even go that far) but it does help to reframe it a little. Attitude is everything right now!  Till I can go wear out my running shoes I am going to keep plugging along, working on my arms and core.
I don't know that I would have discovered I can do handstand push-ups, I was always too intimidated to try them before. Not really sure why.  My kids were even super impressed.

In my no running month I have also discovered I can do headstands, haven't tried those in years
I like yoga, all that stretching feels so good..and can be an okay workout.
I have reached my all time pushups in a row record of 40.
Horse back riding doesn't bug my quad, so maybe I will have to wear my horse out.

What do you do when you can't run or bike?  I don't swim and don't have pool access so that is my story~

  3. Every time I go for a walk with Bungee and see runners I want to be like, "i'm really a runner, too!! I'm just injured."

You're getting huge! I'm way too lazy to try anything else. I never stick with it.

  6. Ok...welcome to the gun show!!! I love your perspective of focusing on what you CAN do! You'll get it back...don't worry!!

  7. So totally get this--it is HARD to be injured. You are reframing it beautifully. When I was injured a couple of years ago, the pool was my salvation, but clearly that doesn't apply to you. But the important thing is that you have something to help get through it.

  8. You are ripped chica! I haven't tried a handstand push up before. We do them in crossfit, but I usually modify. I am very impressed that you can do one. You are doing a really good job on focusing on what your body can do right now.

  9. Look at those guns, girl! So impressed by your handstand push ups! I didn't even know those were a thing! I totally get how you're feeling--injury just plain sucks. Love your new mantra and attitude. Hang in there--this too shall pass!

  10. I've been stopped by 3 different neighbors while out walking, all asking why I wasn't running lately. It's apparently the end of the world for them, too, to see such an unusual sight!
I'll have to try those handstand push-ups in July. 29 more days for me!!!!
And that tank is awesome, btw.

  11. Damn girls look at those guns! Totally understand where you are coming from so vent away! The one positive thing about an injury is that it makes you want to come back even stronger and I can already see that happening for you. You will be back it at in no time so until then get after that strength training because you look incredible!

  13. Nice guns! Wish my injury time off had done that for me! Its so tough being injured, although I try my hardest to rehab and do everything I'm supposed to, I sadly do a whole lot of wishful thinking and longing towards my running friends who just carry on. It sucks but I love to see how hard you're working at everything else!

  14. Love the mantra. Although I know you want to be running right now, I think you're doing the next best thing by focusing on what you CAN do. Your back muscles are freakin amazing!

  15. Love the tank! running and biking are my go to's, but I also do A LOT of walking...at a very slow pace (little g man has to walk too). One thing I really want to start doing again is get my punching bag hung up in the garage and do some boxing stuff. I'm no expert, but I love punching the crap out of that thing!

  21. I'm sure when you get back to running you'll recover your fitness in no time. Especially with all those extra muscles to help you! I'm trying to do some upper body strength work too, while I look after my ITB. I think my triceps forgot they were there!

  23. So so sorry to hear about the injury Christy but gosh you look great. All of the strength training is really paying off. Hang in there. You will get through this and will end up stronger.

  27. Finally getting caught up! I am so bummed to hear that your leg is still hurting. You are being smart though in continuing to rest it even though it stinks.
I love the tank and you are seriously getting ripped!! And flexible! You are gonna spring right back after your leg heals!

  28. Wheelchair badminton. That's what I'm doing..
Only kidding, but I understand your pain here. Limited XT options are HARD. A pool would be so nice. Can you row (on a machine) or get to some water for canoeing, etc?

I agree with Michael that you are RIPPED. The time spent on arms and core is not going to waste- and this is also going to add to your mental strength. I like the mantra..I am right there with you!

  29. Bummer. I feel your pain (oh..no pun intended!) and hope you get better ASAP. However, you can see this as a great way to work on your cross training (like you are doing) and to realize strengths in other areas. It will be a little work getting back to where you were before, but you know how to do it, you've done it before and so I think it will be no problem!

Because I love hearing from you all!
