Rattled

After a about two weeks of frustration I finally got my blog domain renewed and off the suspended list.  What a pain in the butt that was!  It was amazing how hard it was to get someone at Google Apps to a) reply to an email or b) provide a phone number to call.  I had the most luck by going through Go Daddy.  Someone from Google Apps finally called my yesterday and helped me through it.  Thanks Milton!

Fall is officially here and as you can see the hills around here have lost their greenness.  Cola and I went for a little off trail run Monday and I got my legs all scratched up on all the sage brush.

It was a beautiful morning and my favorite thing about off trail runs is not worrying about pace, just enjoying the run.  I also tend to get in a lot of hills when I do them so it can probably count as a hill workout too.

I was trying to decide where to cross a coulee at one point and decide where I wanted to go next when I looked down and saw a rattlesnake coiled up not even two feet away from me.  I had already walked past him at least twice.  Thank goodness he could have cared less about it.  He never rattled until I stopped and got out my phone to take his picture.  Even then it was the quietest of rattles as he slithered backwards away from me.
I have to admit that both Cola and I were feeling a little rattled (ha ha) and headed out of the hills after that.  When I got home and took off my shoes they were full of cheat grass seeds.  Nasty things. I took my socks off and another handful fell out of each sock.  Not sure I will be able to save the socks the cheat grass is so embedded in them.

Yesterday was a no run day and I am hoping to squeeze a short run in today after work.

Have you ever had to toss a pair of socks after a run?

  1. I. Hate. Snakes. :shudder:

Never had to toss a pair of socks, but I don't usually go trekking through the wilderness here. Too many gators, snakes, wild pigs and things that go bump in the night around here. :)

  2. I feel like if I was running routes like you do, I'd get lost all the time. It does look beautiful, though...you know, besides the snake.

  3. Haha I agree with Running Ricig - I'd probably end up lost, or at least tripping constantly, since I'd always be looking at my GPS instead of what I was running into! Also, cheat grass, uck, looks miserable (and itchy!).

  4. Oh that grass looks so bad. Ugh! I would have tossed them too. So annoying.

  5. I agree with the ladies...I would just be running around aimlessly! I threw my socks away that I wore going to and running Boston. It was POURING that day and they were not even close to being saved!

  6. I'm shuddering at the snake...hate them! And yes I've had to throw away a pair of socks just because they were beyond salvation...lol. So sad especially when they are a favorite pair. Lovely view. Just gorgeous!

  7. A) Snakes are horrid.
    B) I'm pretty sure you're the most badass trail runner ever. I mean, you don't even use trails. That's pretty cool.

  8. I am so jealous of you beautiful runs out in the country/hills! I am NOT jealous of happening upon snakes, though. I would have been sprinting away screaming. No joke.

  9. Ugg! I was hoping that the title didn't mean Rattlesnakes....geez I hate snakes! You'd think I'd get over it since I live trail running so much, but no, not even close. Glad it didn't care about you!

  14. Such beautiful scenery on your runs, besides for that snake! I don't mind snakes, but we don't have rattlers out here in the NE so I'm not sure I'd stick around to take a photo if I ever did come about one ;)

  15. Rattle snake awesomeness! I had one rattle at me years ago when hiking. Of course I stopped to take a pic, but the lens I had on was too long. So, I went back to my car, changed lenses and went back to get a pic :) It wasn't that good, though- it was too well hidden.

I did toss a pair of socks after each Tough Mudder and the Merrel Mud Run.

  16. Not a snake fan. Once in a while we encounter a grass snake here but too moist a climate for rattle snakes... haven't seen one of those for many years. Ours are harmless, at least. BE CAREFUL out there! Glad you got your domain mess cleared up!
