Three Things Thursday: in a word ranty (is that a word?)

1. I would like to present my kids as proof that drinking whole milk makes a kid overweight and clearly the school lunch program has it right when they only have 1%, skim or chocolate (because what kids need is more sugar) milk options for the kids. Between the two of them they can easily go through a gallon of milk a week.  Whole milk
I know they also have genetics on their side, I just get a little annoyed when I hear about how you shouldn't drink whole milk because of the fat.

I know there are those who argue against the need for milk at all, blah blah but I grew up on it and so did my husband. I can't see as though it did us any harm.  My husband drank a lot of milk fresh from the cow. I kind of wanted to ask the overweight children at the football camp yesterday if they drank whole milk.  But I probably better mind my own business.  for now

2. *warning: soapbox coming out and I am climbing on*

Okay so I am running a 10k this weekend.  The 5k starts at 8 am, the two mile walk starts at 8:25 and the 10k starts at 8:40.  Am I the only one really annoyed by this? (pretend you are running it)  Happily that means that all of the 5k and 2 mile people should be out of the way by the time I finish.  But sometimes this time of year it can be a little warm (pretend you live around here and you think running in 60+ degrees is hot for running).  Why for the love of running isn't the 10k started earlier?

Start us all at the same time, start them 10 minutes earlier, start us an hour earlier, but geez why is the longer race in the hotter time of day? Luckily the weather on Saturday is looking like a high of 66 and cloudy, so I should be okay.  I just remember being so hot the last time I did this 10k and I hate running hot if I can help it

*steps off box in disgust and pulls her big girl panties up*

3.  I got a new yoga DVD (to make my Amazon shipping free when I ordered some books for my daughter) and I think I hate it.  I haven't tried it yet but it seems so weird and the music is like belly dancing music (I used to take belly dancing classes)(it was a lot of fun). I keep thinking I should at least try it before I totally write it off.  It had such great reviews.
But that day won't be today.

So tell me longer race first or last? Or am I just being whiny?

  1. You are not being whiny at all and I FULLY AGREE with you. I ran a 25K about a month ago that ended up starting an hour and a half after the 5K and an hour after the 10K and get this: the 25K was not ran on the same course. The entire back half of the race was full sun

  2. They are banning whole milk but not chocolate? That's just weird.

Are all of the races on the same course? Does that mean you'll be tripping over walkers when you start?

  3. Yeah, that is annoying. I think longer races should always start first, if not at the same time as the shorter races. Good luck anyway! Hopefully it's not too hot.

  4. There is a new 1/2 marathon this year in my town and I had to beg and plead to get them to start it at 9 instead of 10.... It's 8/31!!! August! A half marathon starting at 10!!! Yes, that makes sense, lets run for 2+ hours in the hottest part of the day, at the hottest time of the year. Brilliant! Oh, you know why? Cause they want the race to end at lunch so everyone will buy the BBQ afterward. That is, if they survive the noon time heat. ugh. So I suppose 9 is better than 10, but jeeez. 7 would have been perfect. Whatever. Have some EMT's handy. That's all I'm sayin'.

  5. The longer race should definitely be 1st. I never understand why races do it the other way around:/ When I rant the hot chocolate 5k a couple years ago the 5k started at 6:45am and the 15k started at 8 or something. They were just starting as we were headed to our car. Weird!

  6. No - I agree - let the 10k start first, then the others... you'd all be finishing around the same time. I guess they want to keep it clear though for you 10k'ers...glad it wont be hot.

I have yet to find a great yoga DVD I like... they're all so weird. I've just been trying the yoga workouts free on youtube.

  7. The longer race should start first, of course. I watched the Honolulu Marathon last December - it started at 5:00 AM with the 10K run/walk starting AFTER.

My 2 cents on the milk argument - the overweight children don't drink milk of any kind - they drink sodas.

  8. I agree, longer race starts first!

I also agree about full fat everything - I don't like milk (something about drinking another mammal's breast milk makes me squeamish), but I grew up drinking full fat, and my kids drink full fat, and none of the girls are fat. It must be my amazing genetics :D

  9. I'm with you on the race time start. So the race I ran last weekend had the 10k first, half marathon 10 minutes later, and the full marathon another 10 minutes after. It at least started at 7, but still. It is HOT in June, and yeah, WHY start longer distances later and have to leave roads closed longer? I don't get it.

  10. Ditto what the others have said! Good luck with your race.

  11. Whole mike here and the 10k should be first. Have a great race.

  12. ugh. i'm sure that race directors have their reasons...but when they start races late, i firmly believe that they are not themselves runners otherwise they wouldn't make those decisions. ugh.

  13. I read somewhere about not restricting young children's fat intake. I agree with you 100%. I grew up on whole milk too until 2% was a delivery option. Now I prefer the taste of skim.

Let us know what you think of that yoga DVD when you have tried it and do reveal the title! I am still always looking....

  14. I don't understand that race timing logic at all! Not only will you be hot, but you'll have to dodge the walkers and slower 5kers. That's got to be frustrating. I hope it goes better than expected for you!

  15. Loving you ranty side! The milk thing is ridiculous. In fact, I though kids were meant to have whole milk. The decision about chocolate milk is awful.
Hope your race goes well despite the silly start time. And how annoying about the DVD. I've just about given up on a good ballet DVD - same problem that people say they're good but the stylr puts me off...

  16. I would be so pissed about that start time. That's just begging for trampling and problems.

My husband and I drink exclusively whole milk. We are so overweight and riddled with health problems too. It's clearly the devil.

  17. You are not being whiny at all. The half I did this weekend, the full started 13.1 miles behind us and at the same time. It was great. Less congested course for everyone, and I got to see the elites come in from the full after I'd had a chance to cool down a bit from the half. And yes, no one should be made to run later during the summer. That's just mean.
