With a Grateful Heart

Alright, sorry guys, I am going to talk bladder infections today so if this is TMI you can run away now.  I am a nurse so these kinds of things are interesting to me, plus I have a great tip for anyone else who might suffer from a UTI.

Yesterday wasn't really the best day ever.  I had gone to bed knowing a bladder infection was coming on.  Desperately I searched the Internet for home remedies to at least alleviate some of the symptoms until I went to work and could get a prescription for some antibiotics. (note: I am not a person who just runs for antibiotics at the drop of a hat, but past experience has taught me sometimes they are worth it for this)  If you have ever had a bladder infection you know how miserable they are.  We live out of town and since it wasn't an emergency I hate to make a trip into town for something that can wait until the next day.

(Tip alert) I learned 1 tsp of baking soda in a glass of water can help as well as drinking warm water with lemon and honey, or honey and cinnamon.  So I had a glass of very warm water with half a lemon squeezed in,  1 tsp of baking soda, a tsp of honey and a dash of cinnamon.  My kids laughed as I gagged it down, but it really did help.

In the morning as I was getting ready for work I gagged down some more, but with only 1/2 a tsp of baking soda this time (not as effective if you are curious but much more palatable.).  As soon as I got to work I discovered I had a student.

Let's back up the bus here and talk about how I DID NOT DRINK ANY COFFEE in the morning because caffeine is a bladder irritant. So you can guess I was crabby, edgy, and uncomfortable with the bladder thing going on and no coffee

I was chugging a lot of water with lemon. I just couldn't handle anymore baking soda and I was worried it would have weird side effects, so I was wanting to run to the bathroom a lot.  Not a great combination to be putting me in a great mood to teach or work.

I had some equipment issues and got a little crankier. Thankfully I was working with a PA friend of mine and I texted him and told him if he wanted the day to go nicely he should call me over some antibiotics. He did.  I ran across the street to the hospital pharmacy on my morning break to get them and discovered he not only called over antibiotics, but also phenazopyridine.

I nearly cried.  Suddenly I was so grateful that if I had to suffer through a bladder infection at least I had friends who could save me the time, money and effort of going to the walk in clinic for them to tell me what I already know and he would be so thoughtful to add in the extra bit.

If you don't know what phenazopyridine is, it also goes by Azo, Pyridium, Uristat.. it numbs the painful symptoms of a bladder infection.  Can you hear the choir singing, I was pretty sure I could.

I downed my pills as I was speed walking back to work and when I got to the lounge there were huge frosted cinnamon rolls.  (Cue more choir singing.) Yes I ate one.

I hurried off after work to my foot appointment only to discover there was a communication snafu and my appointment wasn't even until Thursday.  Super annoying since I had to leave work 10 minutes early for this. Dr. Tan wasn't even in the office yesterday so they couldn't even try to squeeze me in her schedule.  Eeek, I hate things like that.

Anyway let's get to the grateful heart part (you are probably wondering by now where that comes in, or maybe you forgot all about it by now)  I saw the quote

"Start each day with a grateful heart"

on my Instagram feeds this morning and instantly I thought of how grateful I was today to be feeling better and well enough to at least do all the cross training I want.  I may not be able to run, but at least I can still stay active. I was grateful for friends who are thoughtful and a beautiful spring day. This list could go on all day.

I am in week 5 of Zuzka Lights 10 week arm balance challenge and was happy to get this one

going both ways.  although my entry into it is not as graceful as other videos I have seen of it, but progress is just that and I am grateful I have a body that can do these things.
I still can't get firefly or flying pigeon to fly, but I do continue to work on them. I can't wait to see what the next challenge is.

I posted this picture on Facebook last night
and within minutes had homes for all four kittens we have.  Seriously though are these not the prettiest little kittens ever?  Even better they are super sweet. When I say homes for all four kittens I mean we are keeping one of them, the kids were crying at the thought of even giving away three.

Quick.. what are you grateful for today?

A pretty good week other than...not a lot of running and my foot acting up. I did get a lot of work done in my flower beds and we got a timely rain over the weekend which will really make our hay crop grow.  I love spring.  I have an appointment on Tuesday with a foot and ankle specialist so hopefully something there will shed some light on the situation.

It is so green and beautiful out, I really want to be out in the hills running! Not sure why the photo looks so technicolor.

I want to run so badly and with my foot not hurting it is hard to not run, however after I month of this resting only for it to hurt 2 miles into a run I admit to being a little hesitant to run.  I had toyed with running today before I go to my appointment tomorrow, but have decided not to.  I will instead see what she has to say and give my foot another couple days of rest from running.

and that is my week!   Yesterday was Peaks to Prairie and I as so sad to be missing it, however it did snow where the run part was at least 3 inches of slushy snow covered the roads and they had to delay the start a bit, so that helped make me feel better about missing it, if I have to miss it!

Also I just realized yesterday was the three year anniversary of my blog.  You would think I would have some big giveaway or something.. sorry no.  Not that organized apparently.  I do have a giveaway in the near future does that count?

My Favorite Yoga Videos

GREEN!  I know there are places where it is green all the time, but it isn't here, in fact I think it is only green from April to the end of June, into July sometimes if we are lucky so when it is green I really appreciate it and can't get enough.  So beautiful. A sight for sore eyes as I said the other day and my daughter promptly worried about getting sore eyes from looking at it.

I have been very busy in my flower gardens planting new flowers and bulbs, as someone I met recently put it, I live in "little Siberia" it takes longer for the trees to leaf out and the flowers to bloom up here. It is more likely to snow here in the spring when it is raining all around us.  The price we pay for having the best sunsets and sunrises.

I went to a follow up appointment for my foot yesterday and got just what I expected... nothing but a referral.  Next appointment is Tuesday.

Since I have no running news lets talk yoga. My favorite yoga videos right now:

Colleen Saidman's yoga for Weight Loss.  It has three 20 minute segments. Do one or two or all three depending on how much time you have.  I love them because she is so great for beginners, she explains the movements well and when I am done with the video my whole body feels well stretched.

Cardio burn yoga. This video has a 30 minute and a 50 minute segment.  It took me awhile to like this one, Honestly I didn't get past the 4 minute warm up the first time I attempted it.  It flows really well and each new flow builds on the previous flow until at the end you have one long flow and just feels good.

Zuzka Power Yoga Series.  She has two yoga DVDs out and you can pick and choose which segments to do.  She isn't always super clear in her instructions, but after the first time of doing the video it didn't seem to matter.  I love her power yoga because you not only get in a good stretch, but it is also a very hard full body workout that leaves me sweaty and happy, although she doesn't always hold moves as long as I would like.
YogaFit's Full Body Blast, this video has four segments: full body, upper body, core, and lower body.  The segment vary from 13 to 26 minutes. I usually do 2 segments at a time. The instructors are easy to follow and I find it a good stretch as well as a good workout although not as intense as Zuzka's.

Hatha and Flow Yoga for Beginners, this is great for those mornings when I am slow to wake up.  The movements are all slow and especially in the first segment are held for 5 to 8 breaths.  I don't know why but I have a hard time with a male yoga instructor so it took me longer to warm up to this video, but I am really starting to enjoy it.  I think part of taking longer to like this video was learning to appreciate holding poses for so long.

Runner's World also has some yoga videos on line led by Rebecca Pacheco just for runners that I have done a couple of times as well.  I think they are very well done and are all about 22 minutes.

Okay and if I had to rank them.. this is hard...kind of depends on my mood that day.. but based on my mood right now.

  1. Colleen Saidman's Yoga for Weight Loss.  I love the short segment and variety of moves
  2. YogaFit Full Body Blast
  3. Zuzka 2
  4. Zuzka 1
  5. Runner's World Yoga
  6. Cardio Burn with Patricia Moreno
  7. Hatha and Flow
Do you do Yoga?  Tell me what your favorites are if you do.

Three Things

1.  I have a follow up appointment with the occupational health PA tomorrow, I am sure he won't be able to tell me much and will just refer me on to someone else, so I am thinking I will just make an appointment with someone else before I even go see him.  I was hoping that someone else would be working yesterday so I could bug him when his cases were done.  His wife is an ultra trail runner and he is a foot guy so I am thinking he will be uber helpful for me.

We did take an x-ray of my foot yesterday and saw nothing of significance so at least I don't have any broken bones.

2.  Miss Zippy who has also dealt with her share of injuries recommended this book to me.

I think I ordered it within 15 minutes of her suggesting it.  She was so convincing.
I feel like I have dealt with so many injuries since I ran a marathon almost 2 years ago.  I just want everything all healed up.

3. While I was on Amazon I threw this in my shopping cart too.
I have been wanting more yoga that was runner focused and this had great reviews.  Now I just have to wait for it to get here.

Pity Party for One

I ran Monday, two miles in 17 minutes and 2 seconds.  It felt great, it felt so good!  Then my kids wanted to bike with me so I decided to run while they biked, it would only be for a mile.  Bad choice, two thirds of  a mile in my foot started to hurt and I ended up walking most of the way back home.
It kind of took the wind right out of my sails.  I just rested it for two weeks!  I did do other things like rowing, cycling, elliptical and yoga,  but none of those things bothered my foot.

I was feeling pretty down about it yesterday and on my way home from work I was having a bit of a pity party for myself.  I mean can't I catch a break here somewhere?  I may have cried a little in my car.  It did make me feel better.  Crying is actually healing.  Then I read Kara's lament about not being able to run and felt better.  Misery loves company right?

Since I had some time before the kids got home from school I did 20 minutes on the rowing machine followed by 28 minutes of HIIT.  I was wiped when I was done, but I knew steak was for supper so that kept me moving!

will row for steak

Plan.  Have my foot looked at again, clearly it is not getting better.  No running again. Probably going to DNS my Mother's Day weekend race.  This is what breaks my heart the most.  I wanted this race so bad, it meant so much.

and in other news, there were some dark chocolate covered cinnamon bears at work yesterday.
I like both of those things but I do not like them together,  chocolate and gummy things do not mix.
What about you is it a yes or a no?

Easter, last week and hide the jelly beans already.

Hope everyone had a great and blessed Easter yesterday.  My kids had a great Easter with each other and their cousins.  My son even had made his own Easter basket this year out of a box, baling twine and filled it with some hay.

Last week was a pretty good week with my workouts.

Sunday      20 minutes rowing
                  45 minutes elliptical
Monday     30 minutes elliptical

Yoga 4
Strength 5
Elliptical 137 minutes in 3 sessions
Rowing total of 32 minutes
Rest days 2
Running ..  sorry no

Foot update..  it feels fine, but it did before too then I would get two or three miles into a run and it would hurt.  I plan on running two miles today to see how it feels.  I have rested it for two weeks now. Hopefully that is enough.  Kind of over it!

I am glad Easter is over and the Easter candy can start going away.  I feel like I have ate way too much candy in the last month or so, but Easter really has the best candy!  All those jellybeans.  I feel like I have ate my weight in jellybeans since they started putting out the Easter candy.
The weekend was filled with beautiful weather and Saturday we moved some cows down the road to summer pasture.  I run this road a lot and was really wishing I were running down it.  No running sucks
Hope you are having a great Monday!  What is your favorite holiday for candy?  Easter is mine without a doubt.

Three Things Thursday

1. Today Superman aka my Dad turns the big 60!  Best Dad ever, I am such a lucky girl to have him for my Poppa. He is probably sitting on a tractor today getting the spring crops seeded into the ground.
He set the bar really high for what I expected in a man.  I did do a pretty good job finding one. I knew my husband had to drive a pickup truck, be tall, strong, mechanic on my car, be from a ranching back ground, like cows, want to live out of town and want to raise our kids in the western lifestyle and just overall be a good person.  Also have a sense of humor.  There were other things of course.  I really did try to date some "city" boys but it never felt right.

One of the best things about growing up on the ranch was "getting" to help on it all the time so I grew up spending a lot of time working with my Dad.  I didn't always appreciate it at the time when my friends were off doing fun things, but now I wouldn't trade it for the world.  So many lessons learned that have carried me through my life.

Happy Birthday Poppa!

2. Easter goats. Yep there is such a thing because my kids are getting kids of their own for Easter from their Grandpa (my husbands dad) They were just weaned and are freaking cute.  Not too sure what we will do with them.

Not sure the kids can use them for 4-H projects since they aren't dairy goats (they are boys) and pretty sure they would object to raising them for meat  and those are the two options.
I have been learning a lot about goats though, like 65% of the red meat consumed in the world is goat meat and the US imports a lot of goat meat to meet demand. Maybe we will start raising goats!

3. I felt like a found some mojo back yesterday.  see happy sweaty face selfie!
Yoga, elliptical, two short intense strength workouts and I worked on my pullups/chinups.  YAY for mojo back!

Ever had goat meat? Not me!  I would try it just to try it though, can't be all bad if that many people eat it.

Blogging Blues: Do Tell!

Well as I am sitting here watching it snow outside I am wondering what the average life span of a blog is.  Seems like there have been a great deal of blogs that I have followed since I started blogging almost three years ago that have burned out.  Some I watched start up and then fade away slowly, others announced their departure with a post, some were just gone.  My reading list is full of blogs that haven't posted in months and some in years.

I think from time to time about quitting, but in the end I don't.  I really kind of enjoy blogging.  I like reading blogs and learning about others people's triumphs and struggles.  I enjoy getting feedback from others and getting to try out and review new products.  I have found things through blogging that I don't know that I would have otherwise. I also like to go back and read older posts to see what I was thinking or what I thought of a certain race.

I do find that I go in waves with it.  Sometimes I post a lot and think of new ideas all the time, and other times like now I feel uninspired and wonder what I will write.  I think partially it has to do with my running, or serious lack of running.  The whole last year has been a lot of whining about injury and not running. In that year I have learned I really enjoy yoga and think cycling is boring. I got a rowing machine for cross training and discovered kettle bells.

Blogging can be very time consuming.  I have done a few paid posts, but mostly I don't.  There have been times when I neglected housework because I was busy blogging, but I have neglected house work for worse things.

Things I like about blogging

  • having a support group, there is always someone injured to commiserate with, someone willing to give advice, and most of all people who really "get" me and my love of running.
  • new things, I am always reading about great new products or getting to try them out
  • learning training ideas and what people think of them who have tried them
  • "meeting" lots of runners from around the US and world
  • writing, I enjoy it
What I don't like about it\
  • when I start comparing myself to others
  • when I feel like I "need" to post
  • when somebody I don't want to find my blog reads it, I know putting it out there in a public place on the web is that risk, but there are people in this world I don't like find it annoying if I think they are reading my blog.  I will say the longer I blog the less I give a shit.
  • when other bloggers diss each other, shouldn't we all be supportive of each other?
What about you?
Are you sad when a blogger you enjoy quits?  I am!
What do you like and dislike about blogging?  Do tell!
Be a critic... what do you like and dislike about my blog?

Week in Review and little Cowpokes

Sunday  2 mile run
              40 minutes elliptical
Monday 3.5 mile run
             24 minute HIIT
             45 minutes yoga
Tuesday   rest
Wednesday unplanned rest day
Thursday   30 minutes cycling
                 35 minutes elliptical
                 30 minutes yoga
all morning deep cleaning house (totally counts as a workout)
Friday    20 minutes yoga after work
Saturday  60 minutes elliptical
                30 minutes yoga

Running 5.5 miles
Strength 1  (goal is three)
Yoga 4
Elliptical 135 minutes in three sessions
Cycling 30 minutes (why is it so boring?)

Not my best week ever for strength workouts.  I am feeling a little down about my foot still being a bother and admit to having a bit of loss of motivation.  I also just really want my foot to heal so I am avoiding trying to aggravate it more.  so frustrated.

We helped the neighbors brand yesterday and branded a few of our calves as well.  The kids were a big help too.

The calves were branded and vaccinated for several things.  A healthy herd is a happy herd, and besides who wants to eat meat that comes from sick animals.

Running them through a chute is a good way to get an up close look at their overall condition.  Eyes, ears, feet etc.  It's also great for the kids to get out and learn the value of hard work.

I am planning to take most or all of this week off from running again.  My foot feels fine, but it did when I ran on Monday for the first three miles too.  I want to give it lots of time to really heal up.  Hard to do when I know I have a 5 mile race coming up in 4 weeks.

I have already reset my A, B, and C goals to what I don't know I just know they won't be what they were before.  I hate having to lower my standards.  The last time I ran this race I did it in 34:54.  I can only dream of running that fast right now.  That is not going to happen this year.  I think I will just be happy to toe the line at a race again.

How are your motivation levels lately?  What is your motivation today?  Mine is getting healthy so I can race again and don't have to have race envy!

5 Friday Favorites

Here are some things that I am loving lately:

1. Decluttering!  I am getting rid of loads of things I don't use.  Seriously I had 6 spatulas in the kitchen, and 23 pot holders, not to mention 2 microwaves, one that hadn't worked for over two years. My kids don't know this, but their rooms are next.  They have a horrific amount of toys that never get played with anymore and I am sure loads of clothes that are outgrown. My kids favorite thing about this all has so far been the new microwave box.

2. Yoga. Yep still loving it and getting in at least 4 times a week.  To prevent boredom with the videos I have I supplement with the free ones I find on Youtube, although sometimes there is something comforting about going with a known one. These are the ones I have at home.  I really like all of them.  It is a nice variety of easy slow stretchy yoga and give you a workout kind of yoga.

3. Vikings. I don't have the History channel so I missed the first season and the start of the second, but I can watch some of the episodes on my iPad using the History channel app.  YAY. This is my sister's fault.  A lot of things I get hooked on like this are her fault.  Game of Thrones in another I can blame on her.  She gave me the books 7 years ago and I am still obsessed with it. She told me to also watch CW's Reign but I saw the previews and KNEW I would love it, I just can't take on another obsession right now.  Maybe next week.
yes this deserves to be supersized.

4. I picked this up at Costco recently and have been trying to squeeze in 30 minutes of reading before bed.  Doesn't always work, but if I pick it up during the day I know I will get nothing else done that I should be doing.
I have read some of Philipa Gregory's other books and loved them all so I knew this would be a winner too.

5. Spring!  It is so nice to not be freezing everytime I go outside.  I can't wait for flowers and green and trees to have leaves.  It is so nice that the kids want to be outside all the time and are loving their bikes, they also deleted all their games off of the iPad so they "have to use their imaginations more"  I love that they thought of that.

Three Things Thursday: optimistic or stupid?

1.  and it's another week or two of no running.  I ran Monday and it was glorious.  I however am my own worst enemy and instead of running three miles and stopping while I felt good I decided to spring down to the mailbox and back, which is a quarter mile away.  Yes.. sprint.  I ran at a 6:30 pace and when I stopped I realized the error of my ways.  I have a follow up appointment for my foot coming up.  I am sure I will get a lecture for being stupid optimistic.

2. No running makes me a little crazy, but it does also get things done.

  • dining room chairs are finally recovered
  • broken microwave is off the wall, new one installed and temporary one (that was used for nearly two years and sitting on the counter taking up space is back in storage) I am loving having the counter space back
  • husband replaced the "temporary" stairs to the house that have been by our main home entrance for 7 1/2 years with something permanent and it has a small deck. I am loving it.
3. My kids of course loved the microwave box and spent a great deal of time last night playing in it

Week of no running

Last week was a week of no running... I hurt my foot and it would start feeling painful about 2 miles into a run.  SO here is how it looked

Sunday          23 minutes yoga Colleen Saidman on youtube
                      elliptical  70 minutes
Monday       53 minutes yoga Zuzka Light's 2nd yoga DVD
                    40 minutes elliptical
24 minute HIIT with 12 minutes rowing intervals in it

Tuesday      55 minutes Power Yoga 1 with Zuzka Light
Wednesday  27 minute HIIT
                     20 minutes Yoga

Thursday  Rest day

Friday  30 minutes power yoga with Jillian Michaels

Saturday   45 minutes yoga with Colleen Saidman
                2 mile run
                40 minutes  elliptical
4 hours helping in laws move

Run 2 miles.  Felt great
Strength  3 I am counting Jillian Michaels yoga it was tough!
Yoga  4
Elliptical 150 minutes

Overall not my best week, but I am trying to get my foot to feel better and since it only seems aggravated by running, of course, my running this week was severely lacking.  I was told to ease back into running.  You know start with a mile at a time sort of thing.

Yes I know I didn't follow directions, but I did run 1.5 miles, take a small break to help my kids on their bikes and then run another half mile so it wasn't like I just ran twice as far as I was supposed to I broke it up a little.  My foot was feeling fine anyway.

and it was FINALLY springlike outside.  Seriously. birds were singing and everything.  April started like a bad joke with new snow every freaking day until Friday last week.  OVER IT.

Yesterday the kids did their first bike ride out of the driveway while I jogged beside them, I say jogged because it took us almost half an hour to go 2 miles.  It was great fun.
The weather is warmer, but the sun doesn't seem to want to come out and play a whole bunch, instead the wind keeps showing up.   It is supposed to be 72 degrees tomorrow.  I think we will all melt.

Relays Active Headphones Giveaway

I was recently sent a pair of Sol Republic's Relays headphones to review (I was not compensated in any other way and all opinions are my own) and have to admit that while I was skeptical when I first saw them, and now they are my favorites.  Very comfortable, great sound, and they freaking stay in my ears while running, cooking, kettle bells, on the rowing machine, and I even sometimes wear them when I am sleeping.  (Sometimes when I can't sleep I put on a pod cast and it lulls me to sleep) I have slept with them all night in my ears on multiple occasions and they do not make any part of my ears sore.

They come with four different size options for your ears, which is key to helping them stay in and be super comfortable.

Other things that make them great, they angle in

The outside ring is cushy, not hard and inflexible.
I don't have to fiddle with my iPod, iPhone, or iPad to adjust the volume, it's right on the cord, along with the ability to stop or play what I am listening to, and did you know you can take a picture from your iPhone using the middle button on this also when in camera mode?
Plus it has a microphone, so if someone calls I can talk to them hands free while cleaning, driving, etc.

It also has a clip to minimize cord swing.
Want more info?  Check out their video
They are also giving away free downloads to the song on the video by Run DMT. You can download it HERE

Fun facts:  Did you know most millennials spend 4 hours on headphones every day and own 3+ pair? Crazy! I think I own at least 7 pairs.  and they are all gathering dust right now except my Relays.

Preferred song to listen to on loop when running a marathon: according to a survey
1. Eye of the Tiger   Survivor
2. Roar    Katy Perry (I would go with this one)
3. Chariots of Fire  Vangelis
4. Stronger   Kanye West
5. Freebird   Lynyrd Skynyrd
6. We Are The Champions  Queen

Sweat it Wednesday with a HIIT

I had some interest in people wanting to see what kinds of workouts I do for HIIT.  I realize I use the term loosely and mayby HICT is more aproppriate but whatever, it's my blog.

Here is one that I did Monday this week

I will include a few demonstrations of some of the exercises that I didn't know until recently.  Although they can all probably be googled.

Push Press, how I do this one, squat with KB in both hands, as you push out of the squat raise KB overhead with alternating arms.  I think I learned this from Women's Health magazine
Touch the kettle bell pushups. Put the KB between your feet. Do a pushup and as you come up, reach back with alternating hands to touch the KB between your feet.

Tricep dip on whatever you have available and as you come up alternate touching left hand to right foot and right hand to left foot.
Really you can do any kind of time intervals and as many rounds as you want to do, but two rounds of this and my husband and I both agreed a third round would result in bad form and maybe some loss of stomach contents.

Disclaimer:  I am not a trainer, I am just someone who has spent a lot of my life working out.  I like to make up my own workouts since I workout at home.

Do you want to build a snowman?

It snowed Sunday night and everytime I look outside that song pops into my head.  Do you want to build a snowman?  Go ahead have a listen, see if it doesn't get stuck in yours.

So, do you want to build a snowman?
I think these cows are over the snow too, but aren't those babies freaking CUTE!

Rance and I got interviewed by the news people again yesterday.
They wanted to talk about how the wintery conditions were affecting calving.
Rance made me take of my beanie hat "to show off your red hair" while I did my interview.  He told me he loves my hair and it was part of why he fell in love with me. I reminded him he had always dreamed he would marry a dark haired beauty.  Can't fool me!
He probably didn't like my hat!
Worked some more on this yoga pose yesterday  and my hands actually found each other.

Until I tried the other side .  My right side is so much more inflexible.

I also worked on side crow and didn't get it until I went to show my husband what I was trying to learn to do and then I got it on the first try and held it solid.  YAY, I guess I just needed an audience.
Wow I put  a lot of pictures in this post.  But since I am not running this week to heal up a foot thing I have to do something. Well, do you want to build a snowman?  The snow isn't going to last much longer.  At least it better not.

What song is stuck in your head right now?
