No run, but a hike, a fort, a HIIT and a bit.

I declined my run this morning.  Boo.  I had every intention of going,  I slept in my running clothes, I had my shoes and my watch sitting ready to go, but then I coughed a lot last night.  Boo.  So I did the prudent thing and didn't run even though I was up earlier than usual.   I did have to go to a work meeting and then the kids and I met up with my sister in law and her kids for a hike.
The wildflowers were so beautiful.

We explored some rocks and trails.
Then we headed down to my parent's house for some fun by the creek.  These girls were waiting to greet us. These are young cows and still act very much like teenagers.  They like to group together and stay together and are very curious!
They had the black mud in the creek all churned up, but we didn't let that deter our main reason for wanting to play by the creek...
Fort building!
We spent a good hour and a half dragging over big sticks for the fort. Brought back so many great memories growing up and building forts with my siblings.  The kids were loving it.
I did go home and do a quick HIIT workout later in the afternoon.  Even with no run I had my 10,000 steps in on my new Fitbit that Kohl's sent me that I got from FedEx just minutes before we left for our hike.

Not too sure how I feel about fitness trackers.  Do I really need something to tell me how active I am?  I can see how it is motivating, but do I NEED 10,000 steps everyday?  And who picked out 10,000 steps anyway? Is that challenging enough for me? I don't need it to tell me I sleep crappy, I already know that.  I also wonder if I will quit checking how many steps I have done like every hour.  I bet so.

Who has a Fitbit or other fitness tracker that they wear?  What are your thoughts?  Do you always wear it?

  1. I have a Polar Loop and it is in my drawer. If it would buzz me and remind me to get up and move at work I may wear it more. But wait, I now stand at work as I converted to a standing desk. I didn't like it determining how active I am to be. I run alot and often hit my goal by 9:00 am. What is the point in that? Hope you feel better soon.

  2. I don't wear a fitbit. I just feel like there's information overload in my life.

  4. I had a FitBit Force, which is an older style that they don't make anymore, but it broke. I did wear it every single day up until it broke, so for like, 9 months I did wear it all the time and I never really did stop checking on my steps. BUT I never wore it for sleeping or in the shower-- that type of thing. Like you, I don't need it to tell me that I sleep crappy bc I already know that. I did like it, but like wearing a watch that will allow me to time splits and things like that better and I didn't want to wear two things on my wrist. I will say, though, that when my FitBit broke, the company sent me a refund check for the price of the item, even though my watch was a gift. I thought that was a pretty cool way to stand by your product!

  5. I didn't think I needed a Fitbit. I run so I KNOW I get plenty of steps. But I received one as a gift. Hooked. Love it. I like the heart rate info because I loathe the chest strap that game with my Garmin. I don't think I'd wear one without the HR sensor.

  6. I don't think I "need" a fitness tracker. I kinda like it. I originally got a fitbit last summer and I was OBSESSED with it. I was tracking all my food and using the app... and then I got really tired of having to charge it. I ended up replacing my fitbit with the Garmin vivo fit. Not because I "need" track my steps, but I like to know how active (or inactive) I'm being. I don't think it has really changed my outlook on moving that much, but on a VERY low level day I might get on my treadmill at home and walk for 20 minutes.
