It certainly hasn't been what I would have guessed. Here it is nearly September and I have run...2(?) races I believe. They were both on the small side and both were 2 mile fun runs. I was 2nd female in one and my daughter was first.

and 3rd female in the other.

I was still recovering from tendonitis in my leg for most of the first part of the year and just when running was going really good again I strained a muscle in my back. That had me out of it, like everything for about 2 weeks and not running for about 4 weeks while I healed up. I still feel it sometimes, more like a niggle than anything, but it's there!

So currently... I have a half marathon in two weeks and I am super excited about it. It will not be close to a PR attempt, but will feel good to finally be back at it. I did my last long run Sunday and it felt amazing. I was tired by the end but my legs felt strong through the run.

Just because I haven't been running as much as I would like to doesn't mean I haven't been active! I have been using Beach Body workouts for cross training, I really like 80 Day Obsession and Liift4. I also have been on the elliptical, hiking, horseback riding and lots of fishing this summer!
Hello there!Hello little forgotten and neglected blog. It's been nearly a year since last I visited and poured out the details of my running life. What's been going on with me anyway? Last I reported I was busy training for a marathon. I ran that marathon, although along the way things looked a little dicey. I managed to make my peroneus longus tendon mad at the insertion site near my knee. I am not completely sure, but my theory is one day I poked something hard into my muscle and I remember thinking

"That won't be good for marathon training"

It wasn't. It soon became a niggle that only bugged me when running. And then it bugged me when I wasn't running. Then I took two weeks off running three weeks before the marathon because it hurt so bad. I ran the marathon with only a slight niggle and rested for two weeks afterwards. It felt good. I started running again and soon was in a roller coaster of ups and downs with it being better and then not better. Fast forward to today. I am currently not running.

Yep, not running. Since October 28th. I hates it. I am busy cross training, doing BeachBody workouts and using the elliptical and a spinning bike now once a week while my daughter has dance. I avoid any workouts that have excessive amounts of jumping. Slowly I am seeing improvement. Probably not as much as I would if I just didn't do anything? I don't know, it's so hard for me to not do anything.

I'm also running a Ragnar Relay in 6 weeks. Yeah... not sure that is the smartest thing, but Arizona in February with my running friends was hard to turn down, especially after last winter. I did however not beg for the hardest legs this year. I'm okay with the easier ones and taking it slow. I'm planning to start some low miles in the next two weeks, just taking it easy and using run walk intervals.

Oh yeah... how was the marathon? A minor PR but also just rough... I felt like I was on the struggle bus way too early in the race, I enjoyed it though and it was a beautiful run down a canyon into Fort Collins. I ran about half of it with my sister, who was clearly feeling much better than I.

It was a super fun weekend though, my mom, aunt, and my kids flew down to Denver with me and we did indoor skydiving, went to the zoo and the kids ran in a Spartan race. My daughter managed to win the girl competitive race

I'm hoping this year sees me return strong to running, but if not then there are other things in life... not sure what... just kidding.. sort of. When I started this blog then kids were a lot younger and not so busy! Just a kick check in. With any luck I will be back soon!
Overall it felt like a good week. I am not sure how long I will keep up with the 80 Day Obsession workoutts, they are longer than I am used to and my priority is marathon training. I have always kept up with strength training. The two workouts I didn't do this week from 80 Day Obsession were both cardio workouts...somehow I think I have the cardio part covered already.
Sunday: Progressive run. This felt like it started out slow and hard to get into the rhythm of running but by the end I was clicking right along. Also did 21 day Fix Extreme ABC workout

Monday: was scheduled to be an easy day.. but with weather on Wednesday aka long run day, looking cold, miserable and snowy and weather Monday was looking beautiful in comparison I decided to do my long run Monday. Best decision ever.

The weather was great and the run felt really good. I picked a hilly route and was done before the snow on the roads started melting too much and making the roads a muddy mess
Also did easy yoga in the morning.

Tuesday: 20 minutes easy yoga in the morning before work and 21 day Fix Extreme Plyo workout after work.

Wednesday: Snow blowing sideways, roads drifting and ice covered, below zero wind chills.. yep I kept it inside, especially since I have been feeling like I could be getting a cold. 60 minutes on the elliptical and P90X3 Upper Eccentric (lots of chin ups, push ups, pull ups..ow)

Thursday: Nothing. rest day, and a work day and then we had a fire meeting from 6-10 and I didn't get home and in bed until nearly 11. UGH

Friday: Was thinking to do some yoga today. but nope! I was so exhausted from being up late and waking up at 4 am, I came home from work and crashed.

Saturday: I think all the sleep loss was still hitting me as I felt head achy and had that hangover feeling despite not even drinking. I did manage to slug out a hilly 10k... I was ever so much regretting the route

We have a lot of snow right now.

Tried out the Altra Timps this week, it wasn't love at first slip on, but after running in them I am in love, never had to think about them once.

Sunday: Elliptical for 60 minutes and P90X3 upper body. The wind chills were just more than I wanted to take on two days in a row. I had run the day before with a -22 wind chill and it was no better on this day. I just wasn't feeling it and I knew warmer weather was coming. I also didn't think the roads had been plowed yet.

Monday: Running 6.5 miles easy -7 with the wind chill, which was a major warmup so this actually felt really good! I was also loving that there was now at least a single lane plowed through the snow to run in.

Tuesday: I got off work early and was super excited to get out and run in 23 degrees! Even if the wind chill made it only 9 degrees. My legs felt super sluggish for the first two miles but then warmed up and made the run a lot funner.

Wednesday: Long run day: 13.3 miles Didn't mean to run this far really, but had to spend a little extra time out because Roader decided to follow his nose and took off across the creek where I couldn't follow due to the deep snow and me only wearing running shoes. He came back eventually,
as he always does.

Thursday: Just a little shake out run because I couldn't resist the sunshine. Also 20 minutes of yoga in the morning before work.

Saturday: Speed work day! 800s x 8 with quarter mile cool downs and a half mile warm up and cool down. The 35 degrees was amazing to run in and I now finally feel climatized for winter!
And Roader wanted to introduce to you Whiskey Pete. Whiskey Pete likes to lay by Roader's heat vent, box his ears, and lay in the laps that Roader wants to. They are actually becoming pretty good friends.
It's a beautiful and snowy world right not and after an extended amount of time in subzero temperatures the 20s yesterday for my run felt wonderful even if it was cloudy.

3. I drove down the road a ways from my house to run so we could run the road along the creek, with at least a foot of snow on the ground, trails weren't really on option, but I do like a change of scenery. Cola rides so good in the back of the car, Roader on the other hand always seems to think rules don't apply to him and he climbs over the seats to come and sit with me.

I admit it was cracking me up a little bit to see Cola watching from the back while Roader sat up here.

I couldn't seem to get a picture with both dogs looking forward though

It was one or the other

3. Then right towards the end of the run I wasn't being as vigilant with Roader as I should have been as all of a sudden I heard him baying across the creek in the snowy hills. I didn't have a lot of desire to track through the deep snow in my running shoes so I ran back and forth yelling for him for what felt like forever. I would hear baying in one direction and then another and then nothing.

I knew from previous experience that he will come back and either find me or head back to the car, I wanted to get him before he got back to the car, which was at the barn, where there were lots of animals and I did not want him chasing anything there. The heifers, I was afraid, would be all too willing to run from him and make a fun game for him.

I finally saw and heard him come out on the road about a quarter of a mile ahead of me on the road and he was headed back to the car! I took of running and yelling at him, but in his focused baying state he did not hear me.

I was a mile from the car and he was about three quarters of a mile, I thought maybe I could get closer and get him to hear me. Unfortunately it was also uphill to the barn including one very not fun to run hill. I never did get his attention, and when I came over the last hill to the car/barn, there was Roader sitting sweetly by the car. WHEW!

All the fussing around did add an extra 1.3 miles to my long run.

And yesterdays sunrise for a bonus
I am going to keep this super brief.

The year started with cold sub zero weather for running.

and ended that way too!

Okay, not that brief, there was lots of great weather for running in between, even with the smoky haze that was the end of August and most of September.

Races ran: 10.. the most since 2012 when I also ran ten!

Half marathons: 3

30ks: 1

5 mile race: 1

5k: 3

Relays: 2

Two of the 5ks I ran with my daughter, pacing her to a new PR and it was so much fun!

The 30k was a new race distance for me this year at a new to me race. I highly recommend the St Regis Rail Trail Run. I was really wanting to do it again this year, but it's not going to work out.

I didn't set any PRs myself, but I was very happy with my times especially my half marathon times.

I didn't have any major injuries or back issues this year, just minor things

Favorite fueling: Tailwind, honey stinger waffles and chews

Shoes used: Altra Torins, Altra Olympus, Altra Lone Peak Neo Shells, Altra The One, Altra Lone Peak, and Altra Escalante. I love my Altras!

I was privileged enough to spend the year as an Altra Ambassador and I LOVED it.

nce again I did not keep track of the miles I ran this year, once again it was liberating to not focus on numbers.

It's hard to pick out a favorite race. I loved Ragnar Colorado of course, so fun to take a trip with my running besties and have a mini runcation. And my little sister got to be on the team this year.

My favorite distance is still the half marathon.

Still representing Team Beef and my daughter was super proud to sport her shirt for races too.

After a pretty serious hip injury I wasn't sure this guy would ever run again, but after three months of running off and easing him back into it slowly he is back at it.

A big highlight was once again running a Ragnar Relay with the Montana Running Ranchers
I had it planned in my head all year to run it, but then kept forgetting to sign up. Most of Montana however the three or so (probably more) weeks before the run had a nice hazy film of smoke that at times made it impossible to run in so I decided to wait and see what the smoke did. I didn't want to run a half in choking smoke. Then the week before the race I got a cold. I was blaming it on the smoke. I ran 5 miles in it Sunday and it left my throat sore.

What followed was sore throat, stuffy nose, runny nose, frog in throat, congested feeling, cough, headache... bleh. Friday I was feeling pretty good (ish) I could hardly talk and was blowing my nose every thirty minutes and it felt hard to breathe. I decided no half marathon.

Saturday morning I woke up and felt so much better! Minimal snot and coughing and I could breathe! So naturally I signed up for the half marathon. I'm not sure my husband agreed it was a wise decision based on how my week went, but its hard to argue with a runner who has her heart set on a race.

Oh and there was a niggle in my left foot. Sort of been there since before the Ragnar Relay in Colorado. That had me a little nervous, it really hurt during my last leg of the relay and ached some at work,

Anyhoo.. packet pickup was a breeze.. it was just a bib and a bag for the bib and pins and a few coupons.

Race day weather was looking like 39 degrees at the start with minimal wind and 45 at the finish with minimal winds and partly cloudy. Can I say perfect racing weather? Yes I can!

I admit not having run in cooler weather since last spring I had a bit of a hard time deciding what to wear..shorts vs capris.. long sleeve vs short. I ultimately decided tank, skirt, compression socks, arm sleeves and a buff, and maybe gloves as I hate cold fingers. and I wore my race favorite Altra The Ones. LOVE these shoes

Buses started taking people out to the start at 630. Naturally, being excited about running a half I got on the second bus, only because the first was already full, and we got to the start at 6:50. The race didn't start until 8:15. It was cold, but at least we mostly had the porta potties to ourselves for a bit as the two buses were the only buses and were headed back for more people.

I met a gal from Oklahoma and one from Wyoming and had a great time visiting and walking to keep warm. I saw some people I knew and really it was fun to catch up and meet new people and cycle through the porta potties three times,

Ten minutes out from race time I stripped off my warm outer layer and decided no gloves or sleeves, I didn't want to have to deal with them when I got hot.

I turned on my Garmin and since it didn't seem to be finding a signal, I got my phone out to turn on a tracking app there and no service. Crap.

Race started and still neither worked. Bummer.

On the up side now I know I can at least start a race and run by feel and be pretty on! At least I think I was. The start of the race is downhill so I got passed by a lot of people who were feeling really good and went out too fast, but that's okay I like to have people to pass later.

I saw a 12 miles to go sign and was surprised at how fast it came up, my garmin was still busy searching for a signal and I didn't think my phone was tracking until sometime later it told me I had run a mile in 7:30, which bolstered my spirits to know I was running just about where I wanted to and that I would have some data to nerd out with later.

I was following a gal with a big ponytail as she seemed to have a pace similar to mine although she was about 20 yards up from me. She was great motivation.

Finally my garmin found a signal.. I was guessing about 2.5 miles into the race. I never saw another miles to go sign after 11 miles to go I think.. so I kind of felt like I had a vague idea, but still not really sure.

The miles seemed to click by fairly fast though, this is the 4th time I have done this race so I know what to expect. I was listening to a Marathon Training Academy podcast until about halfway through when I switched to my music. I always do this 5-7 sometimes 8 miles in for a boost of motivation and once again it worked.

The music put an extra kick in my step again, that and the Espresso GU I took around mile. Running past the 10k start is always super motivating, they hadn't started yet so there was people to cheer as you ran by and you are coming down a pretty nice hill when you reach them so between the downhill and the crowd boost my pace picked up quite a bit.

My legs were feeling good, my breathing was doing good, not over labored but working. I was loving it all.

I passed a gal as I was running past a small group of people and one of the ladies not so discretely pointed at me and told that gal to pass me. I was so annoyed she would do it while I could see and hear that there was no way I was going to be passed back and I was not! I used it as more motivation and gave a little kick of speed.

When I was guessing I still had about three miles left I was still feeling really good, but I could tell my legs were starting to feel tired and I was feeling it, but only 3 miles left... I GOT THIS!!

Two miles left (ish) my glutes were feeling it, which I thought was funny since I am such a quad dominant runner, don't worry my quads were feeling it too.

One mile left.. while feeling tired I also still felt really good and knew this was in the bag.. the big question looming in my head of course was... could I get it under 1:40? I knew I was close.. looking back I don't know why I just didn't look at the time on my watch. Math is not a high point while running races though.

As I came down the final stretch I could see the clock but it read the marathon time which started 1 hour and 15 minutes before the half...once again...MATH while running!

I sped up and gave it my all for the last little bit.. I had a 6:32 pace on my Garmin, which I noted later not right then, and my final time was 1:40:0145 GAH! lol so close!

Once I caught my breath I went and got my medal and finishers shirt, some water and a cookie which I never ate and some pretzels that I did eat. I ended up seventh female overall and 2nd in my age group. Out of the 4 times I have ran this course this was my 2nd fastest time... I am happy with that, getting older not slower!

This course has my half marathon PR of 1:37:06

I do recommend this race, it has beautiful scenery, is well organized and while not gender specific shirts they are very nice and I do wear them
Summer has been flying by. The last race I did was a half marathon relay in Stanford, MT with my great friend Billie Jo. It was so hot! I had several other Team Beef friends running in the half and the relay as well.

She ran the first half of the race and I ran the second half. It was a small race but was well worth it. I was originally planning to run the half marathon, but she really wanted me to do the relay with her as the prize was a belt buckle for the winners and she had her eye on it. She was also relatively sure we could win it.
The scenery was gorgeous for sure! Love all the wide open spaces! There was a little cloud cover in the morning that really helped, but by the middle of my run it was all gone and was just HOT out.
and we did win the belt buckles and yes we totally dressed all matchy matchy. The only thing we didn't agree on was the color of our Torins.
I don't remember too much about the specifics of my leg of the race except the last three miles lasted an eternity and it was so hot! Its a small race so there wasn't too many people, I did pass a few but it was all people that were running the half and not the relay.

Our daughters ran a mile fun run, but weren't quite as matchy matchy/

Overall a great time with pretty good swag for a small race, I would recommend it to anyone.

up next for me is Ragnar Colorado. I will be running the same legs I did the first time I ran Ragnar Colorado and am pretty pumped about it. I am looking forward to a runcation with my running besties and my little sister gets to join the team this year.Christy @ My Dirt Road Anthem: A Runner's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05571125963317402377noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6993815500672701308.post-33118750329626944272017-06-26T05:14:00.002-06:002017-06-26T05:19:05.207-06:00Rail Trail Run 30k in St Regis MTI live in the northwestern Great Plains in Montana..think wide open spaces, big skies and broad expanses of land for farming and ranching. Not a lot of trees, so my friends all like to make fun of me because lots of trees kind of freak me out and mountains make me feel closed in and sort of trapped. I know people like to "escape to the mountains" for the "open spaces", but it just doesn't feel open to me. ANYWAY. I ran a 30k Trail Rail Run in the mountains and the funniest thing to me about that was that I don't think the elevation ever went higher than where I live at nearly 4,000 ft.

It was in beautiful St Regis, Montana and it is beautiful. It is also just full of trees and really tall looking walls (mountains) of trees. I felt at times like I could hardly bring myself to look at the tall walls for more than a couple of seconds..I'm telling you, if you haven't been to Montana, there are two Montanas. The wide open spaces and the Mountains.

I digress, but I am also drinking wine. HA! and cooking dinner, and blogging, and watching Orange is the New Black so this recap could be not the best.

I had to work the day before the run. BOO. Like we had mandatory let's count all the things in the building after a full day of work. Okay it wasn't that bad, but it's no one's favorite day. and you can't have the day off. It's a 6.5 hour drive to St Regis from my house. I got home at 7pm and everyone threw their bags in the car and we took off.

My husband was tired from haying all week and I was hoping to sleep some so I wasn't exhausted for the run. We made pretty good time and got in to St Regis slightly before 2 am with only 1 stop for coffee and once to trade out driving.

I caught the bus out to the start at 8 am and it was a quick 20 minute drive and we were waiting out in the cold! I picked up my bib since I missed it the night before and before I knew it the gun went off.

The weather was a little cool but I knew once we started running it would feel AWESOME and I was right. I am standing in the red shirt and red head band in the picture below. I knew I should have taken off my long sleeve shirt, but I was so cold at the start!

Right off I was the 4th person in the race... I kept waiting for some people to settle into their pace and pass me. Nope. I could see the three people up ahead of me for most of the race, which was nice. and motivating.

I was about 2 miles in and I was regretting my decision to leave on my long sleeve shirt, I finally took it off about 4 miles in and tied it around my waist.

I kept my pace right about 8 min per mile give or take a few seconds for the first 14 miles and the miles seem to fly by.

We had to check in at all the aid stations, the first station we checked in at was off of the trail about a quarter of the mile and then back to the trail, but the rest were all along the trail. The aid stations all had water and some kind of rehydration drink. I had Tailwind in my bottles so I didn't look at what they had. I am not sure what else they had at the aid stations, I know there were gels and some foods, but I left those for the people running the 50k and 50 mile and had some Honeystinger waffles and chews in my pack.

I drank a cup of water at all the aid stations and made sure to drink some Tailwind every couple of miles.

I felt really good until about 15 miles in and then I started feeling tired and I tripped! I landed hard on my left knee and was really worried the last 4 miles could really hurt, Both of my hands were throbbing and my right hand was bleeding a bit. Luckily my knee was okay and other than a bruise later was none the worse for the fall, My hands only throbbed for about a mile or so and the pain was a welcome distraction from how tired my legs were feeling!

As you can see there was a lot of gravel on the trail/road we were on so the fall could have been a lot worse, some of the gravel was really rough and thick and there were potholes that were trying to trip me up more.

With about two miles to go we turned onto a paved road and I felt like my pace picked up a bit, and I was feeling motivated by the thought of being done soon. I also knew my family was going to be at the finish line.

Other things that were motivating the last couple of miles... I started passing some of the 12k walkers and slower runners. So nice after miles and miles of just seeing one other girl and guy up ahead of me to have people to pass! I passed one other 30k runner with about 3 miles to go and that was motivating to try to stay ahead of him!

Finally I could see the finish line and as I crossed it my kids ran up and hugged me and I nearly cried.. always so emotional! I received a railroad spike finisher prize and then went and got my swag bag which had my unisex tech tee and a water bottle in it.

I ended up third overall in the 30k and 2nd female and 2nd in my age group
Final time 2:3
My sister in law got this shot just after I crossed the finish line. I was done!
Splits 8:05, 8:02, 7:56
7:58, 8:08, 8:08
7:57, 5:57, 7:52
8:00, and then..? I kept losing satelite connection and had weird ones like 11:07 and 5:37 kind of annoying, but my final time was 2:35:38 with average splits of 8:06 so I know I slowed down a bit the last couple miles but still held pretty consistent I think.
Overall it was a great race and I would love to do it again.Christy @ My Dirt Road Anthem: A Runner's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05571125963317402377noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6993815500672701308.post-25825901387722737112017-05-23T04:50:00.000-06:002017-05-23T04:55:36.693-06:00Run For Heaven's Sake: Josh Tyree Memorial Half Marathon Race RecapI had this race on my radar but didn't decide to sign up for it until the day before the race. My daughter decided she wanted to do the 5k as well. Since the 5k started at 8:45 and the half marathon started at 7, my mom agreed to bring her in.

I didn't think out any big goals for the race. My biggest goal in my head was to finish the half before the 5k started. I thought maybe I would run the 5k with Avery if my legs weren't too tired from the half. (I am training for a 30k, so this is my long run for the week.)

The weather was looking perfect. Temps in the high forties at the start, partly cloudy and only a slight breeze.

Packet pickup was fairly simply except if you hadn't registered yet like we hadn't, it was painfully slow to get registered. We didn't get a t-shirt since we registered so late, we could have one left over from last year if we wanted.. we didn't. One of the last things I need is another cotton race shirt I won't wear.

They had lots of fun swag and you got to pick out two items. I picked out a buff and a water bottle. We all also got bubbles. Other things to pick from included cell phone chargers, socks, hand sanitizer, wind shield scrapers and more.. all race themed of course.

I set out my race things about 8pm the Saturday night and went to bed. I wasn't feeling stressed about the race at all. I was a little worried about having tired legs after the 5 mile race I did last weekend, but my legs hadn't been sore at all after that and I had two great runs this week.

There were only about 70 people signed up for the half marathon, so a small one for sure, but there were lots of volunteers and the course was well marked. I ran this one two years ago in the rain so I knew what to expect for the most part. I had followed a plan for it that time so I wasn't sure I was going to beat my previous time of 1:43:12, but I was hoping to get close.
About 5 minutes before the start I went back and read my race recap from when I ran it two years ago, I think it helped my mental game during the race a lot, knowing when to expect the up and downhills. I also checked out the elevation profile to mentally prepare myself.

The gun went off and so did we... up the hill!

mile 1 7:57, 8:02, 7:46
I felt like I had a hard time getting my breathing under control for the first two miles. I have to admit it made me a little worried that it would be a rough race and was wondering if maybe I should slow up a bit. My legs felt good though so I decided to keep pushing. I noticed somewhere close to mile 3 that the back of my shorts on the left side felt a little cool.. like wet. My water bottle on that side on my hydration belt was apparently leaking Tailwind on my shorts. It looked shut, but apparently was open enough for a slow leak. My shorts were soaked with Tailwind....I started to worry about chafing.

mile 4 7:37, 7:50, 7:35
My breathing settled in to an easier feel and my legs were still feeling good. This was all pretty much a slight down hill with one hill that was noticeable and looking at my pace you can guess which mile it was in. As there was only 70 or so runners in the race at this point we were all pretty spread out. I could see two runners up ahead of me and was glad for it. I used them to focus on and keep pushing. I ate some Honey Stinger chews around mile 5.5 and told myself I could turn on my music at the halfway point. I decided I was feeling good though and didn't. I wanted to save it for when I needed a kick.

mile 7 7:35, 7:27, 7:45
Miles 7 and 8 were still down hill and felt really good. I felt my Honey Stingers kick in around mile 7. and loved the renewed energy it gave me. I turned on my music at mile 8 when the down hill part ended and we started a gradual climb. My legs started feeling so tired around mile 9.5 and I wondered if I was going to hit a wall and be sorry so I ate the rest of my Honey Stingers and drank some Tailwind.

mile 10, 7:46, 7:57, 7:37
Mile 10 and 11 had a pretty good hill in it but also some down hill, I started catching a girl ahead of me and that was motivating for sure. I was feeling tired, but not horribly so and at this point I know it isnt very much farther. Mile 12 I felt a kick of energy again and knowing I had only 2 miles to go was helpful. I started to feel like maybe my shorts were chafing my thighs, but it was just a vague irriation and I didn't dwell on it overly. I passed the girl in front of me going around a corner and heading up the last uphill portion.

mile 13 7:33, .1 pace 6:41
I was a little surprised at my pace here, but I knew the end was in sight and the girl I passed found a surge on energy too and went flying by me. She ended up finishing about 12 seconds ahead of me. The last mile the chafing really started to be uncomfortable, but I still wasn't that worried about it. Until I got across the finish line and checked out the damage.

Tailwind being a little salty and a little sweet makes for some really good chafing. My thighs were chafed raw and bleeding a little. YEOW! My mother had brought my daughter in for the 5k that started at 8:45 so they were there to greet me at the finish line. I loved it.

I got my daughter over to the start and helped her find her friend. I had originally planned to possibly run the 5k with her, but the chafing put that out of the question in a major way. She was a little sad and so was I not only to not get to run with her but I need the miles for my fast approaching 30k

Avery ended up with a PR in the 5k and 5th in the 12 and under age group. So proud of her! I think she is hooked on racing!
I beat my previous time on this course by 2 minutes exactly!! I know mentally that to finish before the 5k, I would have to keep my pace under 8 minute miles.

It was super fun having my mom at the finish line, just like in high school with cross country!

What worked:

Tailwind Raspberry Buzz Flavored. I started drinking it 4 miles in and every two miles took a couple good swallows of it

Honey Stinger chews. I ate 5 at mile 5.5 and 5 at mile 9.5 I don't know if it was imagined or real but I could feel that burst of energy enter my system both time.

It was so helpful to read my race recap from 2 years ago and have a mental strategy.

The weather was awesome. A little chilly at the start just the way I like it!

What didn't work:

Tailwind on my shorts. Seriously. It may be a while before I can run in shorts again. I have worn these same shorts for 16 mile runs before so I know it wasn't the shorts.

The swag. We signed up too late for T-shirts but we still got the bubbles, and picked out a water bottle and buff. They had chapstick and little blue pocket things that can be clipped to your shoe to carry the chapstick or a key or money. The medal were nice.

I would do this race again.

I ended up 6th female and 4th in my age group. Once again, my age group around here is fast! I love it!

Like many places in the northern hemisphere, winter can make for some brutal running conditions, there are some days that are perfect for running and others that are quite inhospitable. This winter seemed more brutal than average with below normal temps for an extended spell and lots of snow. When spring finally arrives it is a most welcome thing!

Here are five of my favorite things about spring running in Montana

1. Losing the layers. When the temps are -10 with the windchill it requires double layers for tights, triple layers for tops, jackets, etc, gloves, hats, neck buff, etc to keep warm. This makes running feel a bit bundled up and also makes for a lot of laundry. It feels freeing to not worry about how many layers, which layers and where is my left glove.

2. Being out in the green. Depending on the year things brown up here in late June early July. It's still beautiful but it's hard to beat that bright green that is here April, May and June. The
3. Getting out the tanks and shorts (and camis and skirts)
5. Not having frozen hands (or ears, or nose, or toes) and knowing that we do get the spring snows they won't last long and will be followed by perfect running weather.
I felt a bit hungover, which considering I hadn't drank at all wasn't a good thing. The run seemed to clear my head for a bit, but then it was back to wanting to crawl back in bed all day.

Monday: Feeling better, except my sinuses and getting snotty... ran some hills, but overall felt low on energy for the run so I cut it short. Also did 21 Day Fix Extreme Upper body

Tuesday: A bit of yoga in the morning before work

Wedenesday: Still feeling not 100% and blowing my nose all the time. UGH Still managed to get in a good long run. Happily it is also a cutback week so instead of a longer run I only had 10 on the schedule. The first couple miles really drug on but I ran the last 4 as intervals to make it go faster

Thursday: Super gorgeous day out so I snuck in a run after work

Friday: Nothing. I was tired and I didn't feel like it and am so very over blowing my nose. Little cowgirl spent the night at my parents with three other cousins and little cowboy spent the night at my Aunt's house with another cousin so my cowboy and I could have gone out on the town, but we were both so tired we just went to bed early.

Saturday: I had great intentions of running, but I felt even worse. I decided that the best thing would be to not run even though the weather outside was amazing perfect for running. I worked in my flower beds, did a 24 minute HIIT workout, helped my Aunt set up her new Total Body Gym
I hadn't much entertained doing it, but when I saw they had a family rate of $35 for the whole family and you got pint glasses, I was in! No t-shirts, which was fine with me. I have way too many race shirts as it is and hardly any of them get worn enough. It is also the membership drive and renewal for our local running club.

The kids decided they wanted to do the 5k and not the kids 1 mile run. I used to get all worked up and nervous before every race, but I noticed today with the race at 1, that at 11 I still had not decided what I was going to wear. I do have to admit with it being a Shamrock run I had it pretty narrowed down.

The kids were pretty nervous for the race, but told me I was not to hang back with them.

The first mile has a pretty significant hill before that ends at right about .3 miles into the run. and my legs that just ran a half marathon last weekend felt like they protested a bit and I was worried that maybe a 5k wasn't my brightest idea. The first mile was 7:24

Mile 2 is pretty flat for all of it and I was pleased to see my pace for this one was 7:07 and wondered if it would hold for the last mile. I was sticking pretty close to another gal and we were passing other runners pretty steady. I was hopeful for a bit that maybe I would pass her too, but she proved to have the stronger legs and by the end of the 2nd mile was starting to pull away from me pretty good.

Mile 3 thanks to running back down that hill we had to run up at the start was 6:59 (I was very thrilled to have it under 7!)

the last .1 or .15 according to my garmin was at 6:12 pace.

Garmin time 3.15 miles for 7:07 pace
Official time 3.1 miles for 7:15 pace

I then grabbed a water and headed back to see where the kids were at. I found my daughter and she was tired but looking strong with about a quarter mile to go here.
and my son wasn't far behind

Either way I'm happy and I was 4th female overall and won my age group.

My daughter finished just over 30 minutes and was 4th for 9 and under. She did so well, but did admit to being very happy to being done! My son wasn't too far behind and is a bit worried about how sore he will be.

My son was 5th in the 10-14 group, They didn't really have kids age groups since they had a mile kids run. There was just a 1-19 age group, but the kids and I went back and counted what would be their age group roughly

We picked up our pint glasses and were going to wait around for the awards but it started to rain and it was cold and the kids were freezing after their run so we ran back to the car and the comforts of the heater, We were going to wait out the rain, but it didn't seem to want to quit so we left. I never picked up my age group award. Insert sad face.
Based on how I thought training has been going this winter and previous times of 1:40:17 and 1:45:37 I was guessing I would fall close to 1:44, but was prepared to be slower also. I haven't done a lot of focused speed work all winter. In my head my predicted pace was going to be close to 8 minute miles.
The drive up to Bozeman was uneventful and I was happy to see clear skies

It was in the mid thirties at the start and I had on capris... I had a skirt in my drop bag that at the last minute wanted to change into, but with 25 minutes to go the lines to the porta potties were soo long and didn't seem to be moving so I just left the capris on.

don't mind the mess.. it was a busy week and it's calving season, but here is what I ended up wearing

After standing around freezing for a bit, it was finally time to start. The first three miles are sloping slightly uphill and my goal pace for those three miles was about 8:15. My breathing felt good and by the end of the three miles I was ready to run down for awhile!

Miles 1, 2, and 3: 8:14, 8:16, and 8:15

About 2 miles in I caught up to a guy who was breathing so loudly and labored it was annoying. He seemed determined to stick with me though and I wanted to say "Dude, you are never going to keep this pace with that breathing, slow down!" Thankfully he stopped at the water station at mile 3 and I did not.

About 3 and a half miles in starts a nice long downhill section that is also very straight and I felt like I was being passed by a lot of people. This didn't make me very happy, but I reminded myself to run my own race. this was the start of the downhill part and people were loving it I guess.

Mile 4 7:54
Mile 5 7:48 turned on the music
Mile 6 7:35 (finally getting my head into it)

About 5 miles in I realized I wasn't feeling focused on the race. My head was all over the place. I worked concentrated on running and recited my favorite mantras. That seemed to help and I turned on my music. More motivation! and I started passing all those people that had passed me earlier. YAY..love that.

around mile 5-6ish there were two girls in front of me running together and they both had earbuds is listening to music I would presume and everytime they said anything to each other they were yelling.

Mile 7 7:36 felt like this was a good pace
Mile 8 7:32
Mile 9 7:53 lots of weaving and the two hills

I started mentally preparing myself around mile 7 for the hills I knew were coming close to mile 9. In my head I thought of the two hills, a smaller and then a larger tougher longer hill and told myself I had this and no hills were going to kick my butt today.

Somewhere about halfway through mile 8 I think we turned the corner and up ahead was a wall of people all the way across the road. The 10k runners were merging with the half marathon course up ahead. I remembered this vaguely but not to this crazy extent. Another half marathon runner next to me was like "what the hell?" and then wham we were into it.

They are supposed to stick to the right so the half marathon runners can go easily past on the left. Not the case. Suddenly I was constantly yelling "coming through" "on your left" and "on your right" and sometimes just "watch out!" After a bit I found another weaving halfer and followed her. We were so busy weaving and staying alert about where to run next that before I knew it we were done with the second hill.

But wait! I forgot about the third hill, the biggest hill. Apparently I blocked it out? No biggie, soon I was over that too and it was all weaving downhill. At least by now there was a little more room and the weaving was easier. Somewhere around mile 9, one of my braids started coming out..ugh. Luckily my other braid had an extra rubber band around it and i was able to get it out, and put it in the other side and somewhat salvage the braid all the while running and weaving. I have talent!

Mile 10 7:54 the big hill, to be serious I was impressed I made it under an 8 minute mile
Mile 11 7:40 the sun really came out and things were getting warm!
Mile 12 7:43 legs feeling tired!
Mile 13 7:32 one mile left, I got this!
.12 6:39 pace finish line push

I am a little mixed on the mass of 10k runners. Had I been going for a PR that could have ruined it. At the same time when you slam into the wall of 10k runners is near the end of the middle of the race when you are starting to feel fatigued and there is still a good 5 miles to go. The irritation and aggravation I was feeling was channeled into getting around all those people. It probably was just as motivating as aggravating. and they help make the hilly portion fly by.

I couldn't believe how much easier the hills felt this time as compared to the last time I ran this... all the hills I ran this winter helped I guess!

As usual there was free beer at the end. I drank mine and then was super hungry so fellow Team Beef Montana/Montana Running Rancher Ryan Goodman (who is training for his first 50 miler) and I went and had cheeseburgers at the Rockin R . So good

I wore my new Altra Escalantes for the race, it was the first run I had in them. They were perfect and I didn't regret it for a second.

This week was full on taper mode for a half marathon I was signed up to run on Saturday. I was finding it hard to get to worked up about the half marathon as the weather towards the end of the week looked very bad and I was planning to make the 2.5 hour drive up to the race the morning of the race. I had no intentions of making the drive if the roads were going to be bad. I don't mind running in the cold, but driving so far on bad roads is not my idea of fun.

Sunday: 2 hour hike with the family, 4.2 mile easy run 20 minutes of yoga

It was a perfect afternoon for a hike and it seemed like it had been too long since we all got out together. Roader loved it too.
Saturday: I meant to get up early to workout, but was so tired from the day before and had to leave
Races: 0 None planned and none run.

Injuries: None running related but I did do some burpees on Feb 2nd that sidelined my running for 5 days and has left a lingering stiffness that loosens up as the day goes on.

Miles run: 118.8 This was higher than I expected it to be and lower than I wanted it to be, but a weekend of fire training left me 7 miles short and the back thing left me about 16 miles short. Overall I am happy with it though.

Weather: I know a lot of the rest of the nation seems to be skipping winter, but we are not. We did get a reprieve and I ran in shorts and a tank at least twice. Yesterday the wind was biting cold. At this point in the year it feel like we have made it through the worst of winter and spring is inching closer, but I am so ready to be done with biting cold.
Strength training: Going really good, for the most part I have been doing the 21 Day Fix Extreme workouts. I like how hard they are and at 30 minutes very easy to fit in before work in the mornings.

Yoga: I have been doing at least once a week, although my goal is closer to 2x a week. I just feel like doing strength workouts more lately I guess. Hope I don't pay for that in the long run!

If I had to grade my month of running I would give it a B. Running overall felt great, I got in all but one of my long runs, I did some hill workouts, but I didn't do very much speed work.

Friday: 21 Day Fix Extreme Cardio workout in the morning before work.

Saturday: 21 Day Fix Extreme Lower Body I had really hoped to get in a short run Saturday, but after sitting in a chair all day for a basic wildland firefighting in a cold room I have to admit I didn't feel like running when I got home. I was cold and my back was feeling wonky mad. So I relaxed after I cleaned up the kitchen and helped make supper and cleaned up the kitchen again.

Miles: 25 (was hoping for closer to 30)
Strength workouts:7
Yoga: 1 (goal is at least twice a week)
overall a good week

We got more snow Friday and Saturday.. not a lot but still more. While the rest of the country seems to be skipping winter, we are not and I am happy for it really.
It's a free Friday.
If you have been following me at all this winter, you might have noticed we had a lot of snow and cold. We had more snow and I think I heard were averaging 22 degrees below normal temps. The last two weeks finally warmed up.. for most of it, and we had some serious melting going on, which leads me to number 1

1. All that melting means MUD. and when you have cows and horses (and goats and pigs and rabbits and cats and dogs) outside to care for a lot of that mud tracked in by everyone is going to stink. The dogs are going to want to come inside and they are going to be up to their armpits in nasty corral muck. This is why mud rooms are a necessity when you live in the country.

2. Mud means moisture which means green grass and hay for the animals and the crops need it to grow which means food for us. That makes it hard to really hate mud. We need mud so I try to be thankful I have mud to sweep, scrub and vacuum. I clean our mud room every day when it is muddy out, sometimes twice a day, sweeping the floor of the loose chunks that fall off boots, scrubbing the dried mud off the floor and vacuuming the rug that catches people as they enter. It can be tedious, but if it builds up in the mud room it starts to track into the rest of the house.

3. Running in mud. Oh the joys of slip sliding around. Luckily the county roads tend to dry up pretty fast and have enough gravel on them that it isn't too big of a deal, but the field roads feel like they take forever to dry up enough to run on and now we are back in a cold snap with more snow (not a lot thankfully) which means...more mud.

4. Calving season is just starting. The heifers, first time mamas, get around the clock checks to make sure their first baby comes into this world safely, which last night meant waking up to this in my mud room.

Her mama had no intentions of going into the calving shed where it was warm and dry and my husband wore out several flashlights at 2 in the morning trying to get her in by himself. She finally jumped the fence and Rance decided to bring baby home to dry her off, warm her up and get some colostrum in her. He will find mama when the sun comes up and reunite them.

5. I have a half marathon in 15 days! I don't know if I feel ready or not. I did have a strong feeling hilly 11.5 mile long run last week so that gives me some confidence, but the speed work has been very hit and miss... more miss this winter with all the snow and cold. I haven't even thought about goals and since speed work hasn't really happened I don't know that I will set any big goals.

This really was harder than I though it was going to be. Do I wish for perfect running weather always? I didn't really want to. How can I possibly be so grateful for the perfect running weather days if I haven't survived the not so great ones. How can I be thankful for 50, sunny and a slight breeze when I don't run when it's ten below, or an 85 degree slogfest where I think I'm going to melt?

Do I wish for PRs all the time? Fun right? But when does fun just become no big deal. I want to fight for it, work for, I don't want a guarantee. I want it to mean something.

Free running shoes for life? A big corporate sponsorship so I don't have to work, only run? My own personal coach? Someone to run whenever I wanted...like long runs? The ability to transport anywhere in the world to run? So many tough decisions! In the end I would wish for..

1. Injury free. There are positives to being injured, like rediscovering cross training and being forced to focus on other things etc. I am pretty good at this point at doing strength training and yoga and I enjoy those things so I don't think I would ever quit doing them. My first wish would be no more injuries that prevent me from running which would mean I could run right until the end of my life.

2. Runcations to look forward to every year. I'm not going to get all greedy here, just one awesome runcation a year would be awesome. I have been doing these for 5 years now, I think, in the form of 200 mile relays. Our team is half men, but I tend to think of them as girls trips and treasure the time I get to spend with my running friends old and new. There are four of us girls that have been on the team for 5 years now and I am so grateful for the time with them. I hope I always get to have a runcation with them.
3. Joy of running. I hope I never lose the joy I find in running. I don't want it to be a chore, granted some days speed work feels that way, but over all I treasure my running time and the joy in the movement and feeling of running. I love the thrill of a race and the quiet peace of a run alone. I love easy relaxing runs and the feeling of pushing myself,
