I am a marathon runner.

I am now three days post marathon.  My legs are still pretty sore, but I think I am over the worst of it.  I have not attempted to run yet.  I think I will wait until this weekend and try an easy run on Saturday.  I did hop on my elliptical Monday for half an hour and will probably hop on it again today for a short time.

My left foot has been pretty sore.  Not sure if it is a plantar fascia type thing, but I think I won't do any hard running until it is feeling better.  No sense in pushing hard to early.  My Mom offered me her extra bike and I think I will take her up on it and do some cross training.  I have been wanting to do better with cross training anyway. 

I love the medal from the Missoula Marathon.  I would have to say it is my most favorite medal ever. 
I love the horseshoe shape and that it is from my first marathon.   The shirt I love since it is a womens fit, but I am not really in love with the color.  The half marathon shirts were orange and the 5k shirts were yellow.  The marathon shirt was (in my opinion) a kind of ugly red, but I did earn it and I have been wearing it a lot.

I am still amazed at how emotional I felt getting across the finish line Sunday.  I remember being emotional when I finished my first half, but nothing like getting done with my first marathon.  It didn't feel like it was twice as much mental and physical toll it felt like exponentially more.  I couldn't even fathom another one after the race Sunday, but now well..totally different story.

I walked around work yesterday thinking

 "I am a marathon runner.  I don't "just" run half marathons, I have run a MARATHON.  26.2 miles.  Twenty-six point two."

Speaking of work everyone was so great and there were signs on the lounge door congratulating me on my marathon.  I love my co-workers :) even if some of them were making fun of the way I was getting out of chairs and hobbling around. 

I haven't experienced any post marathon blues, but maybe that is because I have Hood to Coast coming up in August and other races this fall to look forward to.   My son will start kindergarten in 6 weeks and I will leave for Hood to Coast the day after he starts school.  Time is flying by!

There is a half marathon here in two weeks that I would like to do and I think I have until the 19th to sign up.  I am not going to make any decisions about it until I see how my body is feeling next week.  At this point I am leaning towards not doing it since I am having a foot issue.  That half marathon is usually a warm one and only the top three in each age group get medals

  1. That is really one cool medal!!! how uniques it is int he shape of a horseshoe as well, huh? so fitting for you!

    I think you are smart to see how you are feeling over the next few days...but I have a feeling if you decide to run that half...you will probably walk away with one of those 3 medals ;)

  2. I love the medal! I am so happy for you! You did a great job! I'm not sure I'll ever conquer the marathon--no desire right now. Halves are good enough. :)

  4. I was SO emotional at the end of my first marathon. I saw some of my friends at the 26 mile marker and almost started crying. It was ridiculous. Your whole body and mind just gets so worked up. It's kind of amazing.

    Your medal is pretty sweet! That's awesome about your coworkers. My coworkers all asked what my time was and then had no sense of what that meant race-wise. Oh well.

  7. What a great race you had! It brings back so many memories from my first marathon. I cried like a baby crossing that line. It's such an accomplishment! I'm sure that medal will always be your favorite! :)

  8. Love the medal! I always take 1 week off after a Marathon. I think you are wise to rest. I was having foot and heel pain and my ART Chiropractor worked the heck out of my calf muscle and the foot pain went away. He claims 80% of plantar facitis is a calf problem, not foot. So try using the club and self massage on the calf muscle, it helped me.

  10. Just read your recap! Wow! Way to push through the last 6.2. It's not to say that marathoning gets "easier", but somehow you get smarter and stronger. You'll only improve from here (not that 4 hours is anything to SCOFF at!) Congratulations to you! Enjoy the marathon glow. Embrace resting and recovering. Someone told me that if marathons were easy, everyone would do them. :) That's why we are the nutty ones!

  14. I actually like that shirt! It's good to take some time off, even if it feels counter productive. I actually read an article that said you should take as many days off as miles run in the race! Crazy right?!

  16. Yea, the days and weeks after a marathon are kind of bizarre - your body doesn't know what to do with itself, haha. I've only done 1 marathon, but crossing the line was the best feeling I've ever had in life. And the days after I thought I was on cloud 9. Enjoy the feeling, and congrats on being a marathoner!

  17. Christy, I want to reitterate how PROUD I am of you! More than anyone else, I cannot with you (probably because we're both country girls.) I know how hard you've worked for this ---and you've been such a great motivator to me. (THANK YOU!) I'm just proud, proud, proud!

    As for the foot issue, here's hoping it's temporary and heals quickly. It's good that you're resting it. As for the bike, YES-NESS! I'll be looking forward to your adventures!

  28. I remember after my first marathon my boss sent me a cookie "floral" arrangement. I still have a picture of myself with it somewhere. It IS great to have co-workers to celebrate with.

    I *love* the medal. A definite keeper.

  30. I am so impressed. You have worked hard for so long, and you've definitely earned that awesome medal. My legs are usually the most sore three days after a marathon then things start to ease up. Just come back slowly and don't rush it. Congrats, way to go!

  36. Cool medal for sure! It's such a funny feeling to have knowing that you've covered that distance on FOOT. When I've been in between marathons (all two of them!) sometimes I drive that far and think, "wow, I actually ran this?" Rest up and enjoy the honeymoon!
