Fair Food and a long run.

I went for a long run yesterday and did 13.1 miles.  The first 8 felt pretty good and after that I was really feeling the 10k race I had done the day before.  I knew it would probably be a slower than normal long run due to the race the day before, but wow it seemed to take forever!  I allowed myself walk breaks every mile and by the end I was taking them every half mile.  It left me wondering if I should have made the long run a little shorter today and cut myself some slack.
The sun was just coming up when I left for my run, and thanks to those clouds I really didn't see the sun until the end of my run.  Amazing how much more bearable clouds can make it when it is getting hot out!

I got home out on my compression socks and did some leg elevating on the wall, but then it was back to reality.  I started in on the mountain of laundry that needs putting away, but we had to make a run into town to get my car from the mechanics (finally).  We made a detour at the fair and had fair food!  We got a gyro,  a couple of norskies, and two vikings on a stick.   Mmm so good.  But I think a little bit too much fat for my belly.  I was glad I hadn't got the cheese curds or deep fat fried anything else.  Who thinks of that stuff anyway!

We let the kids go on a couple rides. I rode once on the carousel but so glad I didn't do anymore even just that was making me feel sick.  We are planning to go back to the fair next weekend and go to the rodeo so we didn't do many rides today much to the kids dissatisfaction.  My Mom was also there so she took the kids for a camel ride.  The kids also got cotton candy and sno cones. We ran through the petting zoo then headed out.  It was so hot!  The walk back to the pick-up seemed to take forever.

We came home and Rance and I crashed out, but the kids unfortunately didn't seem to think they needed a nap and kept coming in and waking me up.  there are no pictures from the fair because I let my daughter look at my camera on the way in to town and I don't know what she did. but I kept getting a black screen.  Aaack!  I just got the camera.  But later after we got home I tried it one more time and it works again so I am keeping my fingers crossed and keeping it out of her little hands!

Do you attempt a long run the day after a race or do you cut yourself some slack?

  1. I usually cut myself some slack by taking the day off. Haha! If I feel really compelled to run, then I make it a short run.

Hope you have a great day!

  2. I almost always take the day off after a race, so you're a tough one for doing 13 the day after!

I love fair food so much. :)

  3. This is the first time I ever even ran a week after a race. Usually I take 2 weeks off..

  4. I did the reverse last weekend, long run then race. I'm not going to lie, it took a lot out of me. Compression and icing worked wonders though!

  5. That picture is beauttiiffulll. If it's a short race, I could do a semi long run, although I think my idea of a long run (maybe like 8 miles) is not everyone else's :).

  6. OOO I'd totally cut myself some slack but maybe I do that too often...

  7. I am having the same problem with my camera!

OK...I am still pretty inexperienced with the race/long run thing. I think it would be brutal to actually race a half marathon and finish a 20 miler for a marathon in the same day!
You did something very hard with the race/LR, IMO!

I consider a long run a "quality" day and wouldn't do it the day after a race (use the day for rest or recovery run)- but would try to combine the two with a warm-up, short race- long cool down to get in the long run.

Sometimes fair food sounds great...:) Other times, not-so-much!

  8. Wow back to back hard workouts! That is awesome and can only make you stronger.

    Love the fair!!

  9. You are a machine lady! :)

I might not attempt 13+ miles after a really hard 6, but I'd definitely continue the working out. After my half yesterday, I plan to do 90 minutes hot yoga today to get the blood flowing through the muscles again. I like doing something active after a hard run because I end up feeling much better.

  10. I attempted a long run after a 10k two weeks ago and failed. I made it through 10 but was trying for 14. I'll think more about cutting myself some slack in the future.

  11. I always rest after a race. :) I tend to push myself a little harder during a race, so I give myself some slack afterwards.

  12. what the heck are norskies and vikings? the sunrise is very beautiful. if i'm not doing my goal race then i get back into workouts usually the next day. sometimes this makes my legs take quite awhile to recover, but i think in the larger picture it is beneficial.

  13. I would have done it just like you did... raced one day and then the next, get the miles in, even if they are slow! And yum... fair food is the best splurge!

  14. Wow, 13 miles after a 10K, no wonder legs were tired. I run without a watch when I want to run easy (and not feel bad about the pace). It works. We need easy running. And yes, kids don't seem to need nearly as much sleep as we do...

  15. Even if it was a slower run, good job getting the miles in! I totally base my race recovery on how I feel - not all races are created equal. Sounds like you guys had fun at the fair!

  16. I've turned a race into a long run by adding a mile or two before as a 'warm-up' and then more miles on after, when I've been in that situation. But it doesn't always work out. Sounds like it might have been better to take it a little easy on your run, but live and learn! You made it through!

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what norskies and vikings on a stick are. You have to tell us!

  17. I usually don't do anything the day after a race....it's a good excuse to sleep in.

    And that picture is AMAZING!

  19. I love fair food but I don't know what a norskie or two vikings on a stick are. I usually crash after long runs and don't do them right after a race.
